Netiquette

Recommended Posts

Netiquette is etiquette, but for online things, eg forums, email etc and I thought it would be great for the forum if people followed it.

• Use standard lower-case and capital letters in postings.

• It is considered shouting if you post replies in all CAPs. This action is considered rude.

• When quoting someone else, post a portion of the original message for reference. It is not necessary to post the entire contents of the original message, but just enough to provide context for your reply.

• Be careful when using sarcasm and humor. Internet communications are very impersonal and other may take your words as criticism.

• Before posting a reply, please read your message and look for the following:

Are you sure that the message conveys what you want to say correctly and appropriately?

Correct any spelling errors you find - typos can make postings difficult to read and understand

Use common sense - is this message something that you want to be sent to you?

• Don't post huge pictures, or have huge avatars, it makes the text go off the screen.

• Avatars shouldn't be bigger than 155x177 pixels

• Please DONT use shorthand (e.g r u ok)

UK or US English Is acceptable to use (as long as its some sort of English!)

"Emoticons" are a widely accepted way of differentiating humor and sarcasm from serious comments.

Will you understand it in 3 days if you were to go back and read it?

Useful tips Fred.

I particularly agree with the above, particularly re sarcasm which often comes across as plain rude or unpleasant even if embellished with winks and smiles....they don't always take the edge off.

And never use American spellings - that's unless you want Lesley, Egluntine and I down on you

AND ME!!

You should hear the colorful language I use when Brits use American spellings!! I want to throw my laptop in the trash!!!

(Im sat here giggling my head off as I have had to modify 6 spelling mistakes already :lol::lol: )

That's terrible Fred  - my sister had the same problems and the school didn't do anything............ but we're talking about nearly 40 years ago

It is a shame that they don't help at all :(
