WitchHazel
Hello everyone Well, today I put down a deposit on two of my planned three hens, for collection in March. I decided to go for a Transyvanian Naked Neck and a Buff Sussex, the third will be a Bluebelle hybrid (from a different supplier). There was a hitch though... the Naked's aren't laying at the moment. They do have one 8 week old chick, which they think is a girl; if she is, and if she survives the winter of course, then she will be mine and i'll have all my hens in February. Otherwise I won't be getting my chooks until May! S/he won't be sexed for another 8 weeks, so I guess I'll know at the end of January what the ETA will be. Keep your fingers crossed for me! feemcg
TNNs are definitely an 'acquired taste' - what made you choose that breed Witchazel?
Ain't Nobody Here
She's actually got a really sweet wee face . (I can see a few posts about neck warmers, chicken scarves etc coming )
WitchHazel
TNNs are definitely an 'acquired taste' - what made you choose that breed Witchazel? When i first saw them some months ago, I thought they looked revolting. But when I started to look for Chooks that matched my criteria, I read more about them and they began to grow on me. The reaction from my non-chickeny friends has generally been one of horror, which perversely made me start to talk about what lovely characters the TNN's had, they're very friendly, very rare, etc etc. I found myself liking them quita a lot, and I now think they are not horrible to look at, just really unusual. Fee, is that your TNN in the picture?? She's a little sweetie! EDITED TO ADD: I don't think she can be, she's not in your list of chooks. Does she belong to someone you know? feemcg
No, not mine, I just got the pic from feathersite - there is something cute about them .
Richard
Gosh - quite a wait for you, you will be very excited by the time they come! I must say they aren't quite the cuddly looking chooks that the Buff Sussex are; I have a couple of Buff Sussex. My BS are very nervous - but others on the forum have found them to be very different, so you just don't know!
emu
Congratulations on ordering and locating your hens of choice. I am still awaiting news on the Orpington but have my heart set on 1 Light Sussex 1 Cuckoo Maran and 1 Buff Orpington. Got some leads trying to obtain locally first - would love them for christmas. Guest
March!! How can you possibly wait so long? Amazing!! Laura and CTB put some cardboard chickens in their eglu while they waited - a bit like playing with a dolls' house or pushing the pram around before your baby arrives! iChicken
The Orpingtons are beautiful birds. Our original plan was to get 1 Orp and 2 Pekin Bantams, but Omlet say Orps are too large for the Eglu and local breeders say they won't have POL penkins till next summer so we ended up with 2 hybrids. We are looking at adding a bantam next summer. WitchHazel, you have alot of patience, I hope it all goes well and you get the birds you want. Richard
The Orpingtons are beautiful birds. Our original plan was to get 1 Orp and 2 Pekin Bantams, but Omlet say Orps are too large for the Eglu I'm surprised - I'm sure mine could squeeze in! they ahve a lot of feathers which makes them look bigger than they actually are. I wouldn't reckon you could get more than two in an Eglu but I'm sure you could fit a couple in. My Mark 1 eglu has a smaller door which could be a squeeze! iChicken
After seeing our chickens in the Eglu I agree that 2 Orpingtons could fit in quite easily but any more and they might have trouble turning around. I was shocked by how large it was when it arrived, the photos on the web make it seem a lot smalller.
