Insurance claims

Recommended Posts

I was a very silly chookiehen this evening, and set fire to my cooker. :( the damage seems to be cosmetic, but given that it was a brand new cooker 6 moths ago, chookiehubbie thinks we should claim for a replacement through our contents insurance. I have never made a claim through my house insurance, and am unsure if it's worth the bother, or even if they'll pay out for cosmetic damage (the k"Ooops, word censored!"s have all singed and melted slightly, and the seal around the oven is charcoal).

Anyone had a similar experience and claimed ssuccessfully?

if the seal has gone, be careful! The seal on our oven went thru wear and tear and the escaping heat melted and singed the veneer on the edge of the cupboard next to it.

Not only that, you'll probably need more electricity/gas to run it if the seal has gone.

Best have a chat with your insurers and see what's what, just in case you making a claim goes against you and future premiums go up.

Shona, we claimed once for a carpet burn. Sounds like a set up doesn't it!

I'd just made a saucepan of popcorn for a group of friends that had come round to watch a film. I took the saucepan of popcorn and an empty bowl to put the popcorn in into the sittingroom as the film had started and I put them both down on the carpet. I ended up with a saucepan shaped burn.

Our premiums stayed the same and we paid £50 excess.

I'd be inclined to get your cooker replaced or repaired properly. It's not worth taking any chances Shona, it might be dangerous to use as it is now.

Check your excess, because if it is high, then it might not be worth it. The fact that the cooker is only slightly damaged is irrelevant, if it's unsafe or not functioning properly - they will normally pay for a full replacement, especially if it's only six months old.

It might affect your future premium, you will certainly have to declare it when you renew your insurance - but if you've never had a claim before then it may not make much difference.

I felt a real fool this year when I went to make a claim after my kitchen was flooded by a burst hot-water tank ... amazingly the only things permanently damaged were a bookcase and a rug, total value £120 and my excess was £150  A bit embarrassing that I hadn't worked that one out first, as I work for an insurance company!

Don't feel uncomfortable about claiming though - this is a genuine claim, and that is what you have insurance for!

Why is it always the genuine claimers that feel guilty about it?

I had to make a claim recently after I'd dropped my son's camera :? I felt like a criminal  The replacement value was half the original cost of the camera and was fairly low, but I still felt guilty :?

Well worth speaking to someone about it and checking on the excess limit on your policy.

That is so true.

My daughter's hoover burst into flames and singed her carpet. She is reluctant to claim. To be honest, the carpet isn't worth getting upset about....but she needs a new hoover. We haven't delved into paying the excess versus paying for a new one yet. I imagine it will be a the latter....to speed things up.

We're with the NFU and I phoned on Monday as it had been 4 weeks since I sent my claim in - they had actually settled 4 days later, no questions, no phone calls. Very prompt action.

Unfortunately........ the cheque has gone missing in the post ( ) and needs to be re-issued but at least we can go ahead and buy the replacement.

We claimed from our insurance when I dropped my laptop once... They covered the cost of getting it repaired... I hadn't even thought of claiming, it's DH who thought about it...

My thought is, don't feel guilty if you have a right to make a genuine claim for something the insurance policy does cover. After all, you pay those companies money year after year, you have full right to then use the service you buy from them!

Bad news Shona - I'd be inclined to get in touch with the oven manufacturers first and see what they have to say - as it's relatively new, they may send someone out to assess the damage for you. If it is only cosmetic, then replacing the k"Ooops, word censored!"s and seal shouldn't be expensive and is something you can probbaly do yourself. But do make sure that it will then be safe to use.

I'm all for mend and make do!

We're with NFU too. We got the all clear to replace our tv (after a child threw something at it) the same day and the cheque came within the week with no excess. The premiums rise was minimal too
