Guest
I had to bribe the caretakers today to do a job at lunchtime tomorrow as I can't make any other time for them to get into my room (ICT suites are booked whenever we are not teaching). The caretakers don't really have time to do it lunchtime as they are doing chairs for exams but I promised them a fruit cake if they would squeeze me in. I've used Mums special recipe for pinapple fruit cake and cooked it for 15 mins less than her recipe at 20 degrees less cos its a fan oven and I've just taken out a cake that is totally black on the outside! I never usually have trouble with my oven - except it seems wastefull to use it as its a big wide one and usually mostly empty. Now I have no cake for the caretakers AND I've wasted 2 eggs. The cake took 1 1/2 hours to burn when it should cook for 1 3/4 hours. I'm going to bed soon so I don't have time to make another one. ---UPDATE ---- I got up this morning and James told me the Elves had been - there in the kitchen was one cremated cake and one lovely golden perfect cake! Mum saw it as she let her bridge friends out (don't ask why - they always arrive at her front door and leave from mine) so she stayed up and made another one Edited December 6, 2007 by Guest
Tessa the Duchess
What a shame. Nip into a bakery on your way to work tomorrow with an ampty cake tin, buy fruit cake, put in your tin and present to caretakers, they will never know Tessa
Karen & co.
Shame about the cake Could you quickly put together a fridge cake with chocolate, raisons cherries and nuts and biscuits for the caretakers no cooking and it will set overnight whilse you sleep karen x
Rona
Oh poop! Can you trim the burnt bit off and cover with icing or marzipan. Failing that, a confession and an IOU.

little chickadee
how about eggs? I have the same problem with my oven , but I think I have it sussed now - took quite a lot of inedible stuff before I figured out how much lower the temperature needed to be and how much less time to cook it for. Crazy oven!
chickencam
I burnt a Christmas cake last week it's heartbreaking especially because it is a waste of eggs. Go to the bakers they won't mind and if you are honest and they can have a laugh at your expense being men I'm sure they'll understand
chocolatedog
I have a fan-assisted oven and I always cover my cakes with foil, which I then remove about 20 minutes before the end of baking time......I learned the hard way a long time back - a cake which should have taken 1 1/2 hours was burned on top after 45 minutes!! Needless to say, I've been careful ever since.....

Egluntyne
An extra present is required for "Mum's" Christmas Stocking methinks.

Goosey Lucy
What a fabulous Mum and how great for James. I love it when kids work out their own explanations for mysterious happenings.

Guest
It was fantastic of her - I'll buy her some flowers over the weekend (not chocolates - she is too overweight, I'm not being horrible but she is just 63 and is in so much pain that would lesson if she lost a few stone, I'm really pushing her to do a 100 day stint on Lighterlife 3stone less would make her feel much better). There are definate perks from having her in the granny annexe - apart from the obvious babysitting ones (I go out any evening I like as James is asleep almost right above her). My horrid colleague makes many disparaging comments about my lack of independance - I'm more independant that she is, she has a husband!
