Sans Shampoo haircare

Recommended Posts

Hi Sarah,

My hair wasn't so much as greasy, as thick stuck to the head feeling. This gradually got better and by 9 months was almost 'normal', what ever that was.

"Ooops, word censored!"ody ever said it looked bad. I now was my hair every 5 days or so with water and somtimes splash on a bit of bottled lemon juice, couldn't be easier.

Thanks so much for that - gives me hope! Yes, I can definitely relate to that - the 'thick' feeling. I think with me I'm always going to have to wash every other day (even if it's water only), as my scalp is still horrible (I used to always shampoo every other day, just because of my scalp). To be able to go 5 days between would be just brilliant.

I am just over 2 years shampoo free as well and I will never go back I save a fortune and my hair is in much better condition

It seems to suit some hair types better than others I have loose curls that are prone to frizz and most people whoi suit it seem to belong to this group :?

I only use water never vinegar or lemon etc and can go 2 weeks between washes (when work allows :roll: )

I've been reading this thread and wondering if I should brave all of this or not. My hair is so fine and frizzy it might work really well but then I'm not sure if I could cope with the greasy feeling. I've washed my hair every single day of my life and the gallons of conditioner which have gone down the plughole would probably fill an olympic swimming pool.

I started using SLS free shampoo and conditioner a few months ago, but I am really tempted by giving this a go. I went without conditioner this morning and my hair look really shiny actually and I've only used water on my two youngest for the past two days now.

I feel more and more guilty these days for everything that goes in the bin even if it is the recycling bin, so I think I could give it a go.

Yay! Come and join us! :)

To be honest, I think the best thing you can do is try to wean yourself off the shampoo gradually, rather than completely cutting it out. Others may disagree, but I would continue to wash every day, but without shampoo in between, then gradually increase the number of days between the shampoo.

Good luck and let us know how you get on! :)

Hmm... I hope I am not considering moving to the 'dark side' here, but I have found a baby shampoo made by Mistrys which has the following ingredients: 'Aqua, red korean ginseng, potenised calendula, nettle chlorophyll, rose petal extract, shikakai and reetha'. No detergents.

I started off on the "no shampoo" route last year when the thread first appeared and lasted less than a fortnight before resorting to shampoo as I couldn't bear the greasy feeling, being a real clean hair freak who had to wash my hair every day  . However, despite not being able to stick to the regime, I've managed to gradually go from washing my hair daily to only washing it once a fortnight now and it is in so much better condition as a result. Not only that, it curls in natural ringlets now rather than being dead straight  . I think I could happily leave it for longer between washes as time goes on as it's not horribly greasy anymore after a week or so. So, if you're finding it hard going leaving shampoo out altogether, try going an extra day before washing your hair instead and see how long you can go between washes :D .

I'll give that a go. Thanks for the tip. Have any of you tried washing your hair with a soapnuts infusion, will that count as shampoo. I use it on all my laundry and I know it can be used as shampoo, but is it 'cheating'.

I've used soapnut powder and, to be honest, I didn't like it on my hair - it made my hair feel quite thick. If it works for you, do it though - it's not shampoo, so isn't really cheating.

Kate :D I had absolutely no idea you were doing that! Big, big well dones!!! :D That's a great story - and inspiring.

I use as natural a shampoo as I can find but I can't go longer than a week between washes, occasionally 8 days. I think the type of water we have is also a factor. Louise has lovely spring water. My hair washed beautifully clean in just spring water when I was in Pembrokeshire for a week.

OK, I've managed to avoid the lure of the shampoo and will try to stick with the lime juice for as long as possible. :) Lime juice is really lovely stuff - it leaves my hair silky soft (while it's still wet anyway! ) It's a bit of a downer that my scalp is still so bad (so I still need to wash at least every other day, if not every day), but I think I'll just have to live with that.

Think I'm going to start a separate thread on the oil cleansing method I'm now using for my skin...

OK I've done it. I didnt use any shampoo this morning at all! Its the irst time in my adult life that I havent scrubbed my hair and conditioned it with half a bottle of conditioner.

Thanks to you all for giving me the courage to try it, even if I cant make it past tomorrow morning!

I'll let you know!

Prompted by this thread and unable to commit fully to the no shampoo idea, I have been using some lovely Aveda products, which have made a massive difference.

They are lovely, aren't they?

Gorgeous.

I nearly fainted when I saw the price tag....but I need to use so little that the bottle will probably last 6 months....so it will be cost effective.

OK, I'm going to give this another go whilst I'm off work for a bit. When I tried it last year, my hair did feel a bit greasy but on the other hand the natural oils gave it more body than usual (my hair is dead straight and very fine). I'm going to start with one SLES-free shampoo a week and use water and lemon juice in between :)

OK, off now to round up my natural bristle brushes and give them a good wash!

Yay! The more the merrier. :)

Just to clarify, with the lime juice I use, I don't use it for grease, I use it as the acidity makes my hair all silky (and it also helps my scalp). I used to use vinegar for the same acidity purpose, but I got sick of the smell.
