Joojoo
I wonder if Dave Grohl has any plans for celebrating Christmas 2008? Ooooh, can you imagine ! I could just picture it....roaring log fire, Dave sat with acoustic guitar on sheepskin rug serenading you...*shudder* why dont you ask him when you see him in June?! Ha Ha Ha crikey I'm having a hot flush just thinking about it and hopefully I'm a few years off the menopause!!! I'm hoping Dave will see me as the ideal mother for his future children
Clash City Rocker
I've been in Egypt for 2 weeks over the Christmas period, can't recommend it highly enough!!! Guaranteed great weather over 25 degrees everyday. Options on lazing around or activity it's all there and very cheap. Only 5 hours flying time. Joojoo
I'm certainly giving Egypt some consideration. Do you think it's safe for a woman and child on their own though?
Clash City Rocker
I'm certainly giving Egypt some consideration. Do you think it's safe for a woman and child on their own though? Yes, Mrs clash was worried about taking our 15 year old daughter but in the resorts there was no hassle at all. On the days we ventured into the local towns there was a bit of " how many camels for your 2 wives"!!! type banter but good natured and no nastyness or threats. Once you walked away that was the end of it. ps. both camels are settling in nicely

harveypup
OOOH Portugal!!! It is such a friendly and family orientated place (without the dreaded kids clubs!) Traditional food good, beaches gorgeous, sunshine, flights cheap and accomodation lovely.

Joojoo
I love the idea of Barbados and it's on my list of possibles the only thing that would possibly stop me from somewhere like that is the cost. Unfortunately I'm on a limited budget

Joojoo
Right I'm back on mission to find a holiday!! Has anyone been to Tunisia? I don't think I'm going to be able to afford the long haul holiday after all so am looking abit closer to home. I wanted to visit Tunisia years and years ago but hubby wasn't keen so we never got there. Any experience/info on resorts and/or hotels would be gratefully received. Thanks x
Jules.
If it's peace & quiet you are after then we have been to the Villacana resort on the Costa del Sol many times. http://www.macdonald-resorts.co.uk/holidaycollection/villacana.html For a cheaper option you can google Villacana & rent property direct from the owners instead of MacDonald hotels. My parents are going to the Dona Lola resort in a couple of weeks. They are flying with Easyjet & then they make their own way to the accommadation by public transport. superjules
I'd go to Egypt (red sea) over Tunisia having been to both. The cultures are similar but there's great snorkelling in Sharm to keep your son occupied and if you go for an all-inclusive package you know exactly how much to budget for. We've just got back from our 3rd holiday in Egypt. We always go in February because it's lovely to get some sun at this time of year and a 4* all inclusive is cheaper than a villa in the canaries, so it's a bit of a no-brainer for us. In terms of safety, you'll only get hassled if you go outside the resort on your own. If you just want to read a book on a beach or by a pool it's the perfect destination. Joojoo
Thanks Jules x2 I'll have a look at both your suggestions. Is Sharm el Sheik pretty safe for wandering around? Laura - where did you go in Tunisia and what made it so bad?
superjules
In Sharm, you need to bear in mind that if you walk past a shop someone will try to persuade you inside to buy something and they can be quite persistent if you are not firm. That's exactly the same in Tunisia though. On our last 2 trips to Egypt I went from the hotel to the beach and back again and didn't bother going anywhere else because I don't like the whole haggling malarky. Most of the hotels have private beaches so you don't have to venture out if you don't want to. Sharm is a totally tourist resort. "Ooops, word censored!"ody you speak to was born in Sharm, all the hotel staff live in Cairo and work 3/4 weeks then go home for a week. The resort, as a whole, can't risk anything happening to a tourist and damaging the industry so they all seem to take security of holidaymakers very seriously. Joojoo
I'll have to pop into the travel agents and pick up some brochures for the Red Sea. I know Ashley would adore the snorkelling and I've heard it's absolutely fantastic for it. It's good that they are so security conscious after what happened a couple of years ago. That's the only thing that puts me off travelling to certain places
superjules
Joojoo, With the amount of people who travel to any resort you have got to be seriously unlucky to be involved in such an event. I don't know what the statistics are (I like statistics - I used to work in market research analysis!) but they must be in the region of the one-in-a-million type of odds when you think about it. Maybe I'm more philisophical about these things because I missed the hyde park bombing by about 20 mins, was in St Albans when the Arena was bombed and my sister was 30mins out of Kings Cross on the night of the fire. crazygal
I wouldn't recommend Tunisia either, I got literally dragged into a shop by one man in the bazaar, not a pleasant experience, and I also got very bad food poisoning. still might have just got unlucky. What about the Canary Islands? 4 or so hours flight, guaranteed sunshine...if you pick your island and area carefully you can avoid the crowds of Brits if that's what you want to do...and the scenery is very dramatic- fancy visiting a volcano?? Some of the highest security measures I've ever seen at the Tourist Resorts in Egypt. As a family we used the main resorts and some of the smaller villages in Egypt both daytime and in the evening without any hassle other than the usual "come into my shop" and "exchange camels for wives" routine as I said before "both camels are settling in niceley" My only experience of Tunisia was a day stop while cruising in the Mediteranean, for me it was a waste of a day, wish I'd stopped on the boat!!!!
