henny penny
Hi , new girl still pondering. The area where my chickens will live is overhung by a neighbours very large shrub of cotoneaster. This has dropped berries and some leaves and I spent last week end raking them up. My question is ,is this plant including the berries, posionous to the hens. Also are there other plants we should keep them away from(':?')

Billy the Whippet
Oh crumbs wish I hadn't read this list - our gardens is a good size and rather 'wild' - I know we have some of the above in situ but I must say my first two chickens didn't come to any harm (altho obviously they did die in the end) and my two new ones seem to be OK. Carol U
Good for you! Don't worry about things in the garden. Just enjoy them. Chickens seem to know the things that are bad for them and leave them alone. Welcome to the forum.
henny penny
sorry Billy didnt want to worry you or any one else for that matter-I was just being overanxious rather like an expectant mum!. I'm sure that if you have lots of other plants for them to hunt around, peck through, then you will have no probs, especially if your other hens were ok. I have also read to day that often the poisonous plants taste awful to the hens and so they dont tend to eat them! anyway best wishes, and sorry if i got you worried. Hen Watch
The chooks seem to know what they can and can't eat so I wouldn't worry. Rhodedendrons are on the poisonous list but my lot take a couple of nips out of the leaves then ignore it. (May be they don't like the taste.....) One Man Banned
I think generally most hens seem to know what's ok and what's not. Our laydees have eaten a few plants which must have been lovely the speed they munched through them and totally ignored some others. Of course, two secs in the veggie plot and it's like a kid in a sweet shop A xx
