chickencam
I love making my own bread and so far most of it has been made in my breadmaker, but I would love to experiment a bit more and from reading books it would seem that the best results come with fresh yeast. I have no idea where best to get it and I have only ever used easy blend yeasts but quite a few of these contain the sort of enzymes that are added to commercial bread and I would like to avoid these because they can affect how well the bread is digested. Any help would be gratefully received

chickencam
Ebay is my first thought for most things, but it didn't occur to me for this. Thanks I'm off for a look
moochoo
I've been known to ask at my local bakery / supermarket for a small amount and I've always been either sold or given some. It's worth being cheeky!
chickencam
Do the instore bakery area have it?
Goosey Lucy
I used to get mine from the local baker. Hardly charged me anything for it, I think it was 40p for 1oz?
Egluntyne
My local bakery sells it. The bakery dept of your supermarket will usually sell it too. Not so easy if you are boycotting it though!
moochoo
Yes, instore bakeries usually have fresh yeast.
chickencam
I've ordered some on ebay 100g for £1.20 + £1.00 postage and I might try Morrisons instore bakery as well. Thanks all I have some wholewheat black pepper and Parmesan bread rolls rising ready to have with the leek and potato soup that I made this morning, I will let you know what they are like. bronze
My morrisons were very unhelpful when I asked. Wortha try though as supermarket bakeries were what was suggested to me first. I buy in large quanitities on ebay and freeze, just have to be careful defrosting.
Lesley
Our wholefood shop sells it.
Guest
Yes, instore bakeries usually have fresh yeast. i read on the money saving expert forum once that they have to give it to you free if you ask for some, some old law that forbids the sale of live things or something!? There were loads of people who said they'd tried and got some FOC. Don't quote me though, go and do a search on MSE
Blackrocksrock
Asda in store bakery gives it away - or did when I asked for some! Edited February 16, 2008 by Guest
chickencam
My ebay yeast came this morning and I have baked a lovely large split tin loaf with it, well I say lovely I haven't tasted it yet but it looks and smells good
Daisy's mum
Poet is correct, your supermarket or bakery should not charge you for live yeast. You can buy it from health food shops but again if they charge they are sort of breaking the law though! I think that if the customer says that it should be free then it is, otherwise they charge but it isn't usually very much. Julie x
BeckyBoo
I've tried finding the legislation but I can't. Can anyone else tell me what the law is as our local baker is SO TIGHT, it's legendary, he's a millionaire but made all his bakers (in all 9 shops) throw their radios in the bin as he wasn't going to pay for the electricity for them to listen to music. I would LOVE to force him to give me some for nothing!! mrs Bertie
