Linda
This is so funny! I hoover them up too - it's about the only way I can deal with them I have also plugged up the end of the pipe and even shut the hoover in the garage for a couple of days when particularly worried!! On the other hand, I like those yellow and brown spiders in the garden and have been fascinated watching them with my daughters. I'm perfectly happy with them as long as they know their place!!! Guest
I guess we're all squeamish about some things... but I would never intentionally vaccuum or kill a spider. Any spiders are welcome round here - catch them in a little pot and post them on to me - they can free-range round my house for as long as their little lives hold out. have you girls got no soul??? haven't you read Charlotte's Web??? Phil Perhaps me and Dan should start a spider sanctuary??
The Dogmother
Linda, I am glad to hear that my leccy blanket has provided so much inspiration. I use it on the nights when Phil doesn't stay over and it keeps me nice an warm.Having said that, i wouldn't swap The Boy for anything; it has taken a lot of false starts, but I've got the one for me! He even gets rid of spiders for me - I am petrified of them! I usually throw one of the cats at them, but have been known to be trapped in a room by a spider I love my blanket, and it has it's uses, but I would ditch it for Phil if it cae to the crunch. Lesley, you've got a gem there too; he's such a great bloke.
Guest
Given the proximity of these posts - and for any newbies on the forum - it ought to be made clear that the "Phil" who Clare refers to is not the "Phil" which is me.. I've seen the photos and he's much handsomer... Phil
The Dogmother
Thanks Phil 'The Reverend'! He's bald, so unless you've lost your hair, you couldn't be confused! Hey, have we ever seen a pic of you? I don't think that you'd approve of my pagan leanings either!
buffie
I wouldn't swap my man I like my man with good food and wine though BBx
Guest
what makes you think I'd disapprove of pagan leanings? I do disapprove of many things - spider murderers for one - but pagan leanings are not on the list... actually I am challenged in the hair department... but I'd say "thinning" rather than "bald" there's a photo here - http://www.trinityurc.co.uk/pictures/philphoto.jpg and I've lost the middle section since that was taken! The Dogmother
Ahhhh, what a sweetie! Do you have two parallel lines (as a friend described it) now? How refreshing to find a church person who doesn't back away when I admit to not being into conventional religions. I hope that I didn't offend you with my assumptions. I grew up in an Italian Roman Catholic family, and just went in the other direction because it seemd to make more sense to me.
Guest
I have an airport runway... no - not offended - you'll have to try harder then that! I'm (personally) not that convinced that belief systems - whether Pagan, Wiccan, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Atheist, Humanist or Secularist (with all points in between) are that important.. all of us have a complex set of beliefs that we cobble together for many different reasons - some rational, some not - some to do with where we are born or experiences we have... it sounds simple - but the bottom line (for me) is the quality/depth of selflessness that we can attain.. or in other words - love... Phil (OK - enough of the sermons - back to chickens!)

The Dogmother
Phil, that was brilliant! Thanks for that, and for being so tolerant - I am so used to being dismissed as a nutter I really liked that one - balanced and rational. Ta muchly again! Hellcat
Great sermon Phil. Now, if only the bl**dy spiders would learn that my house is an 8 leg free zone the Dyson would have less to do. I am also fascinated by the lovely garden ones and will watch them with the kids. I also went to Tropiquaria last summer with Lauren (6 years going on 20) and her class on the school visit and, after a LOT of pressure from lots of little girls held a red-kneed tarantula. EEEEKKKKK!!! Made me go all funny inside. Bleurghh! Still hate them in the house though! Also, wouldnt swap my other half, who else would clean out the chickens?! (see chickens vs pregnancy)
Hellcat
Oh and Clare, on the subject of pagan leanings, I work with a witch and have to confess to being very interested in the whole thing. Not sure I would convert but paganism seems much closer to the pulse of life than other belief systems. Just saying...
The Dogmother
I tend to agree too Helen. We have friends who are Druid priests, and Wiccans and I find a lot of their beliefs sensible and close to nature. I used to work with a buddhist,a nd some of that rang true too. All I need now is the time to research all these subjects properly and make my own 'patchwork quilt' of beliefs. Our Wiccan friend is a herbalist too, and Rosie loves to tell people that she knows a white witch
Linda
Good to come across people who are open-minded about a range of beliefs. I find the beliefs that are closer to nature 'speak' to me. I feel connected to the earth( ) and have been described as earthy

Guest
in which case - DON'T MURDER SPIDERS!!! you can't be "earthy" AND murder spiders... Phil (in a dogmatic mood!)

The Dogmother
Sorry Phil, that's the one flaw in my theory. I can put up with most things, but not a spider.
Sheilaz
What's better than a man? (I think that was the topic ) A cup of tea, of course! Re spiders...it's a phobia isn't it? I know it's not rational, but I can't even touch the place they've been or the rescue object. Hence, I couldn't let it crawl on a teddy & shake it, I would seriously then have to throw away the teddy. But, I can't hurt them either. So, it's usually a length of loo paper, long enough to avoid touching a fast runner (shiver) dangle it out of window & shake, flush away paper. (or scream & drop paper in front garden I hate the way they stare at me
Linda
Sheila I totally understand and agree with your logic!! (If I remember correctly, you've been accused of logic on another thread recently, haven't you?)
