Couperman
A friend of mine has a chippy and has loads of bits of cod left each week that she can't use. She says it is boneless and I can have as much as I want as it only goes in the bin. I was planning on boiling some up and feeding it to the girls. Does anyone see a problem with this? I presume it is full of protein and may help when moulting etc. Do you think they might prefer Sushi? Kev.
The Dogmother
What lucky chooks Kev.. I'd give it to them, provided that you're sure it's boneless and you cook it thoroughly. Just don't tell DEFRA
ali-s
My girls devoured a Haddock (I think) which fell from the sky in the summer The whole fish went within seconds, skin, bones, head, fins, everything The poor Seagull which dropped it must have been really hacked off

I meant daily rather than weekly, She was saying that once defrosted there are bits she can't use. And whilst it is fit for use it is the wrong shape etc. She isn't allowed to re-freeze nor would she risk her reputation by doing so. But it is a shame to throw good food away and if the chooks enjoy it I have an inexhaustable supply! Like I said if the girls don't like the stuff I will make some fishcakes and eat them! Guest
in that case, give it a try however, when you take it to the girls you have to sing..."you shall have a fishy on a little dishy, you shall have a fishy..." erm, right, bed time for me I think! Kev Our village chippy has got round this by battering and frying the offcuts and selling them 5 for a £1 as ocean dippers for children Mine love them! MedusA
As a vegetarian, it would never be likely that I would have any fish bits to give my girls. But in your case I would say yes for sure. I'd rather your girls had them than they went to waste, and they would be a good source of protein.
Carol U
I think it's a great idea. Mine adore tuna, so why not cod? No matter how much they have, it never makes their eggs taste fishy. Lucky chooks, I say.
Couperman
I have just taken delivery of my first bag of cod, I'ill boil it up tomorrow and let you know what the girlies think! I got a free bottle of garlic sauce too!(for me) yum. Kev.
Christian
I'm sure they will love it Kev. Mine go mad for tuna, so cod would go down a treat. You making a parsley sauce to go with it??
Egluntyne
I don't somehow fancy garllic sauce with cod. Is it a local delicacy Kev?
MedusA
I don't fancy garlic sauce at all! I'm "intolerant" of garlic (makes me ) . As a vegetarian who can't eat garlic, it makes eating out a nightmare. Why can't people understand that garlic is not the only flavour for vegetarian food? Couperman
I don't somehow fancy garllic sauce with cod. Is it a local delicacy Kev? No its for lashing on kebabs and the like rather than cod! It goes well with the local delicacy known as a Parmo though! Kev.
Couperman
Well I think we can safely say that they like Cod! I grilled a few lumps of the cod, checked for bones, mashed it up and seasoned it with Posh Spice and Flubenvet It lasted just under two minutes, and that was a dinner plate full! I think I will cook the rest, save some for tomorrow and freeze the remainder. I don't want to give them too much or they might not eat the pellets but I don't suppose it will matter so much in this weather, it will give them a bit of a boost and it's a sneaky way of worming them!
