Mrs Frugal Posted January 31, 2008 Author Share Posted January 31, 2008 Well despite putting up a notice on a lamp post in this road and one near the post box on the main road, no one has been in touch. My friend called yesterday and has been making enquiries at the school and apparently the poor little hen was spotted about a mile away early yesterday morning running down the main road and again further on in this estate so it's a miracle she didn't get run over. From the direction she was running from, LSH thinks she may be from a farm in the next village so we're going to pop up there tomorrow and ask if they're missing a hen. If not, I really don't know what else to do to let the owners know we're looking after her. The local vet has her listed in his lost and found book so there's nothing more we can do. If no one claims her, we're very happy to keep her as she's already laid us an egg today . She's delightful, if very skittish, but with a bit of handling, she'll get used to us. If no one claims her, we'll find her a companion to share the pea green penthouse until the other hens get used to them then they can all live together in the Purple Palace . It's a week since we found her wandering in the street outside our house and no one has claimed her and we're rather delighted as we're totally smitten with her. She's adorable but very feisty! Initially Ollie named her Hera to go with the other Greek Goddess names he gave the Sussex Girls but she's more bag lady than Goddess so we're calling her Coffee, taking the first three letters from her "Chicken Of Fate" label . It suits her, I think. For the last week, she's laid us a lovely brown egg every day and has been living quite happily in the pea green penthouse in a sectioned off part of the big run. I'd been thinking this morning that we'd introduce her to the others at the weekend as she looks a little bit lonely on her own even though the others were only on the other side of the netting panel but bless her, she beat me to it! I went out this morning to find she'd hopped over or dug under the barrier and was quite happily digging about in the main run with the others. It's funny but she's always reminded us of my lovely Clarry and she's stepped right into her vacant place in the pecking order at number 2, keeping the Sussex Girls in order with a swift peck or a growl! If it was possible, I'd swear she was Clarry back from beyond . Anyway, it looks like she's part of the family now and she's most welcome !
