ajm200
Hi, We are in the process of chicken-proofing our garden ready for our new arrivals next month. We are getting gingernut rangers and pepperpots and want to let them free range most of the time but I suspect that one of our fences may be a bit short as it is 4 1/2ft at the lowest point. I'm intending to move everything away from the fence so they won't have anything to use to help them hop over and I guess we'll have to clip their wings. What do you think? thanks Amanda
Egluntyne
My guess is 6ft.....based on how high my girls can flap. Others may have different ideas.
peanut12
definitely, my girls jump 4 1/2 foot easily, even landing on top and that is only balancing on chicken wire! I would put trellis up on that fence to 6 ft.
ajm200
Thanks for confirming what I suspected. Unfortunately the fencing firm cut all the posts down when they installed the fence so adding trellis will be a challenging little project for my hubby I'm getting some fencing from Omlet to fence off my veggie patch so I'll use some of that as a short term measure. Jules.
Some of our fence panels are less than five feet ( I've not measured them, I judged it by whether or not I could see over them ) No escapes so far, & the girls could get a head start by standing on one of the two benches which back onto the fences. Once I caught Poppy standing on the back fence but got her down easy & she's never tried it since- maybe she thinks our garden is nicer than the neighbour's now that she's seen it. Egluntyne
2 of my naughy girls get on top of the Eglu and then launch themselves over the netting. They are cleverer than we give them credit for!
ajm200
Hi, From your notes it sounds like some hens can be a bit naughty.. should be fun We've ordered some willow screening that is over 6 foot to attach to the fence so hopefully that will keep the inquisitive girls at home Thanks again for all the advice Amanda
Snowy
Our lowest fence was 4'. I've lined it with 5' high willow roll (was meant to be 6' - I bought the wrong one ) But it works OK.
