moochoo
I've just bought a copy of the magazine Let's Grow Veg from Tesco's (it's the only place that stocks this issue). http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/letsgrowveg/ Included in it are 10 packets of vegetable seeds and a coupon to get a free blackcurrant bush! It does cost £7.99 but having looked in my local garden centre most of the seeds cost between £2 and £3 a packet anyway. As this is the first year I'll be properly growing my own I thought this was a fantastic bargain! There are 5 issues in the series to keep you in seeds for the whole year. Eyren
I've seen it advertised in "Grow Your Own", which I subscribe to - I assume they are produced by the same publisher. Great idea if you're just starting out and want inexpensive seeds BTW, this month's (March) issue of GYO includes a packet of tomato seeds from a variety that's better at coping with cooler weather (Sub Arctic Plenty) - I'm definitely going to give them a go after last year's fiasco! Guest
oh, ive got £18 of club card vouchers today, I might get this magazine thank you cathy x Couperwife - don't waste your Tesco vouchers they are worth 4x as much if you use them for deals instead. I got nearly 2k off my QM2 trip last year with my Clubcard vouchers!

Guest
I always save my Tesco points now - got another 1k worth already (I take FULL advantage when they have an extra points offer which is worth more than the product - I have about a gazillion Johnsons baby poweders and moisturisers which cost approx half the amount that the points are worth!) The QM2 wasn't that expensive about £2800 with 2 days in NYC first. It cost A LOT to be going as a single person - the cruise fare is virtually doubled. Oh it was fabulous - I absolutely adored that ship - I got off on the Tuesday and on the following Saturday got onto the QE2 with Mum and James for the family holday. The QE2 service was AWFUL (was great the previous year) and the ship was nowhere near as nice as the QM2 So this year we are doing the DOUBLE crossing as a family - which means I get just 1 day (actually about 10 hours!) to shop in NYC before getting back on board and heading home. This one is quite expensive as its effectively 2 cruises but we are treating ourselves.
Couperwife
10 hours in NYC I dont want to know what sort of damage I could do to my barclaycard in that time but i'd love to try cathy x
Guest
I might post a total if it doesn't frighten people! I'm planning it like a military operation - I get to do it on my own - so "Ooops, word censored!"ody slows me down wanting to look at stuff (or not wanting to shop - NOT James' idea of fun!) Mum and James are going to spend the day visiting my Cousin and his family who are living in Brooklyn at the moment. I'm going to get off the boat and get a Taxi from Brooklyn to Central Park, grab a breakfast of home fries and then go down 5th Avenue, stopping at pre planned shops - then Canal Street and then Century 21 before hopping into another taxi and heading through the Battery tunnel to re-join the ship! I planted mine a couple of days ago, along with some 'Gardeners delight' seeds. I'm waiting for slightly warmer weather - it's been so frosty here, and I don't have a heated greenhouse for the seedlings to go into once they germinate
Christian
Nor do I Eyren. The OH loves all the window sills covered in seedlings
Eyren
My lively cats would knock any seed trays off the windowsills - I have had to clear a space in my utility room for the initial germination, but it's not light enough in there for good growth, so then they go into a mini-greenhouse in my unheated but double-glazed conservatory. One of the cats likes to climb the plastic cover of the greenhouse, though, so it will have to go outside as soon as the really cold weather is behind us! pickled egg
Oh yes - I love this time of year - days getting longer, birds chirping in the garden and all that expectation of a great veg plot ahead. But then I'm so impatient I have windowsills full of seed trays that I look at in a pointed fashion about 6 times a day - come on seeds whats keeping you its sunny out here . I keep rifling through my seed box seeing if its time to sow more yet .
chickencam
We already have peas planted out in the garden - hopefully chicken proofed - and more coming on in the greenhouse. Broadbean seedlings in the greenhouse to be planted out in a couple of weeks, some lettuce seedlings and herbs. Yesterday we planted some shallots around the peas and some garlis in our raised beds so we can have some green garlic at home when we want it. I also planted out about 60 sweet pea seedlings yesterday and they have survived a cold night. Will be planting loads of other seeds this week and hopefully knocking the allotment into some shape to plant our new raspberry canes bought at the weekend
Christian
Thats what i forgot in the garden centre! Raspberry canes. Now someone please remind me, which grows fruit the same year? Autumn or summer fruiting? White onion sets already planted into pots to transplant later. Next door have given me some red onion sets, so will do those too this year. Any idea if they store well? pickled egg
autumn ones fruit in the same year. much easier as you can chop the lot down in the winter - non of this working out 'which is this years growth?' malarky. Not sure about onion storage though....
chickencam
Red onions don't normally store as well as white ones but this year we have still got plenty of firm red onions.
