chelsea
We are re turfing our lawn this weekend (again! ) before our hen party. We are thinking about fencing our lawn to protect it from the chickens in the winter and they can go on the lawn when we let them. Do you think if I get a small picket fence around the perimeter of the lawn it would keep the hens out? I was thinking of something slightly shorter than waist height with a pointy tip.....do you think the hens would try and perch on the top? Any advice, tips or experiences welcomed! Richard T
We have a fence just like that between us and next door and four of the chickens wouldn't dream of hopping up on to it ... the fifth however - Jean - is always hopping onto it and jumping down into next door's garden. Luckily, John next door doesn't mind, and he minds even less when Jean lays an egg in one of his window boxes. I'm still trying to work out a solution to this that doesn't involve a chicken wire assault course.

I dont think for one minute my big cochins or old gal Ella would jump on the top - I think the cunning Maran would though. I thought I read somewhere if the top of the fence was "pointy" they wouldnt attempt to land on it?

(She's always the one that finds the gaps in the hedge too. Last Sunday she led three of the others on a country ramble in the field at the end of the garden. John saw them go past and hasn't stopped laughing.)
The Dogmother
You're better off with something flimsy Chelsea, they tend not ot like flying over that. Some people top their fences with fruit cage netting.
chickenlass
Lol you sound as if you have a nice chicken friendly chap living next to you. Richard. I looked into picket fencing to protect my new veg area but to be honest it was going to work out really expensive. I think it looks so nice but thinking about it I think my girls would just flap over the top so have had to make do with chicken wire. It would certainly look great if you did go ahead

Janty
Most of mine wouldn't be bothered to jump up, especially the cochins, but my pekins are monsters when it comes to perching high up.
