Guest
Check out my blog see www below - my first batch of eggs in my incubator are hatching out today - since 10.30am this morning. They are so cute and are even cheeping. Tomorrow I will be able to get them out of the incubator and you will be able to see them all running around, fluffed up, eating and drinking and playing in their broody box. It's so exciting. I have already ordered some rare breed ones to go into the incubator - hopefully they will arrive by next weekend. Happy happy Dilly Edited March 29, 2008 by Guest
Egluntyne
How lovely. Can't wait to see photos in the flesh. Quail chicks always look like bumble bees to me. I love reading your blog Dilly.

chelsea
Quail chicks always look like bumble bees to me. Aww what a lovely way of describing them!
Guest
I have bought altogether three of the bantam/quail penthouse aviaries. Two new, and one only a few months old. I have also bought an ark with a run - that has 'opening' doors on the run - like a chicken broody ark and run, and I also have another broody ark and run which I use as a 'sin bin' for the bantams - so lots and lots of room I got rid a of a big shed at the side of the bungalow - it was on slabs too - so I have room for housing there, on slabs. How are your quail coming along Bronze - any photos? The quail are really cheeping away now behind me - bless them.

bronze
Wow, not getting carried away then I don't have pictures. Mine are now outside (as of today- they should have gone sooner) and I can see them pottering around when I am sat at the computer. Hopefully I'll start getting eggs in the next few weeks. Just bought some leg rings so I can divide them up as to males to keep, males to go and females. When thats all sorted and they start laying then I can start on my next batch ps i take mine out as soon as theyre fluffy I can never wait 24 hrs. Guest
So it was safe to do so then. I must admit I was a bit worried in case those hatched this morning 'cook' being in there for 24 hours.
Guest
The baby quail are brilliant and much bigger than bees - which is a relief. OH had visions of them flying around like bluebottles and him 'accidentally' sucking them up in the vacuum cleaner when the cleaned up! 19 energetic little birds chasing about in the 'playground' and full of life. I don't think the other 5 eggs will hatch - they did do a bit if moving around we thought - but it might have been wishful thinking. More pics on my blog (www beloe)
bronze
Theyre so cute. I cant believe it was only 5 weeks ago mine were like that. Its worse than having children.
Guest
It is far less painful I hope to be getting my next lot of eggs this week - fingers crossed - white ones this time.
The Dogmother
I've just posted a comment - they are sooo gorgeous Dearest Dilly.. I bet you want to sleep in there with them, just to keep an eye on them, of course! Are they in your office, or your studio? Can't wait to see them at Easter! Guest
They are here right beside me - and will stay here a week - then I might move them to my studio - or might not - depends how big they get. They are so cute - and guess who keeps looking at them the most every time he walks past - and keeps counting them, and calling me to look at their antics. Yes the man
The Dogmother
I can't believe that old devil of yours - he's as soft as we are really, isn't he? Tell him that they can't eat choc ice! They sounds really mischievious, like little kittens; my friend who used to breed them says that they never stopjumping about..... like popcorn! No doubt Rosie will want some, I bet that Biscuit would too, but for different reasons.
Olly
Dilly, they are gorgeous - I usually read your blog regularly but I'd missed a few days, and all the excitement happened while I wasn't looking! I am so pleased for you - you sound absolutely delighted! They really do look cute ... and I'm glad 'im indoors is as besotted with them as you are! Well done, I would never have the patience for this sort of thing - and as if you weren't busy enough with all the other things you do. I will keep reading the blog to see how they grow. Guest
Thanks Olly - haven't been getting email advice when topics are updated. The little darlings are a week old - and at this age they are a 'scream' just can't stop 'popping in' to watch their antics - and OH does too. They are hilarious. And if you haven't read my blog for a couple of days - there is even more news now on the poultry front.
bronze
Dilly I found that my females were more gutsy and had biggerbeaks. Adult females are bigger so that makes sense. I'm very jealous I only got goldens and normals though 3/4 of my goldens are female
Guest
Well that's a good ratio of females. I heard back from the chap I was talking about - and he said you could either dry feather pluck or scald. He said he will write up a topic about it so I will keep you posted Bronze
Guest
Fingers crossed for some wonderful surprises in the next 24 hours. The Japanese Quail are now in their teenager pad - complete with mezzanine floor - and it was absolutely free! Quicker to look at my blog below as I am rubbish at putting photos on here. What an exciting weekend coming up!

Guest
How did you get on with your dressing last weekend Bronze?
bronze
Not done it I've left them to grow a bit. I think D suggested 6 weeks for the males because he has his on turkeys growers. I'm using the slower method bit like the slow growing chickens Will have to do it soon though . I go through stages of being motivated so I hope I get one soon. Maybe I should go watch some RC or something to get me in the mood for plucking
