Louise
I think the reason the surveilance area is so large is that part of the Fife coast has several large areas both mainland and islands that are bird reserve/sanctuaries so they are being naturally cautious to keep people aware about this and away from danger I lived in Fife as a child and used to go bird watching in those places with my late uncle thay are very beautiful and I hope they don't get a massive hit with this
Cinnamon
I think that dealing with ill informed people is going to be as much of a challenge as the bird flu itself! Literally 4 minutes after the swan was confirmed,my neighbours son came over "to buy some eggs " He said ,with a huge grin "I bet you are rally panicking now,I can neck the chickens if you want" He was just DELIGHTED to be imparting such bad news. I explained that if or when it came to this part of the Country, then I would think again about panicking & no,I did not require his assistance with the chickens What is it about people that they just love imparting bad news,& enjoy a reaction? He is now off my christmas card list & will be first against the wall come the revolution
Louise
I told the girls yesterday they will now be the pariahs of the neighbourhood they looked up and went back to their breakfast I am waiting to see who is the first to ask me when I am getting rid
buffie
I think it's really interesting how different people in different areas respond. No panic or concerns here . If you think you may have awkward neighbours why not beat them to it and pop a leaflet through their doors and let them know Defra is dealing with this and we are being kept informed and up to date. Spell it out to them and wouldn't let the sadi 'boy' have any more of my eggs, nasty thing! As has been said so many times our girls are kept in the best possible conditions and are safe. A walk in the park poses more, still very minimal, risk, oh well I have fingers in ears and news bullitins kept to minimum. it'll die down but at least we know what we are facing now BBx
Guest
Is it just me, or is anyone else getting fed up with all the newsreports being filled of pictures of chickens in the background? Did I miss the outbreak in chickens in this country? Was it, in fact, a White Star that the found it in, and NOT a swan? I realise that everyone is concerned it will spread to poultry, but having captions behind newsreaders with chickens in the background instead of swans, ducks, geese etc is really beginning to **** me off!! chocchick
Annoying the papers don't represent the truth isn't it? The metro had a huge colour photo of the virus stained bright blue and DON'T PANIC in huge letters across the front. Sensationalist rubbish Said birds would have to be moved indoors, which is rubbish as there is nothing new on the DEFRA website. Went for tea break, and people said, oh we were worried about you, we thought you were off with bird flu yesterday grrr
Lesley
Yes, and me as well - just show swans or other wildfowl - that is what is present at the moment We must be the only people who will be having some sort of fun with our neighbours Some of you know we have one neighbour who hates us so much that she is only waiting for some excuse to report us. We can't move to the farm before Easter as we were hoping and we have cockerels and ducks reserved and awaiting collection. The person we are collecting from really needs them to move out so we will be collecting them just before Easter. This means we will have to house them here for a week The ducks will be noisy, the cockerels may be crowing and of course, we are likely to be bringing Bird Flu to the neighbourhood By the time she has complained - we will be gone - having caused a lot of unrest for a week Spiteful? Me? - never
Lesley-Jean
AI in this country is a commercial problem rather than a human health problem. Mass death of wild birds, including swans, would be a terrible shame but numbers would recover. Not many (including the government) would suffer financially. Masses of free ranging chooks makes a good picture, and are easy to find. It also (falsley) points out to the public that they are unlikely to come into contact with at risk birds. Pictures of swans geese and ducks - less dramatic. Oh and they are in all our local parks and river banks where the chilren play (wouldn't want to point that out, would they). SarahJo
A bear, lion and chook are having a pint in the pub Bear says " In the forrest I just growl and everyone is scared". Lion says "Well I am better than that .. I roar in the Jungle, and everyone is afraid". The chook says " Thats nothing .... I just have to sneeze, and the whole world C***s itself". . Hellcat
Please remind your neighbours that chickens don't cause bird flu, its carried by wild birds, and if they stop feeding them (which they should do by now, as their natural food is returning) they will reduce the risk. We were away this weekend and when we got back it appears that the person who was going to feed the birds didnt, happily they were hungry but still hadnt eaten the pellets (they prefer the mash) so not that hungry then. Still, he said it was because the wife didnt want him near the chickens 'what with bird flu and all that'. Bah!!
Lesley-Jean
What If he had agreed to look after them when you were away, that is just what he should have done. Oh no sorry ... perhaps is OK to let them starve they are only nasty dangerous chickens. I'm a bit sensitive there. You cant just leave animals to go hungry, would he have fed them eventually
motherhen
That is so stupid, cruel and pathetic and.......(I'm running out of words I can use on a family friendly forum) Just make sure the stupid prat never gets to enjoy any eggs from your lovely girls again. Linda
I have just caught up with this and my mouth has literally fallen open with disbelief and disgust. It's appalling! I feel sorry for these twisted people. We can get away from them but they have to live with themselves all the time. You can only imagine how barren and sad their lives are.
