Countdown to ex-batts... getting excited... its TODAY

Recommended Posts

Aha - maybe I totally misunderstood  We did keep our girls in for five days before letting them free range. It says in the bhwt info to keep them locked in their coop for the first 24hrs - which I took to mean actually inside. It says to feed them layers mash for the first week at least which will get damp outdoors, but the grub is under the eglu shade so if it does mean inside the run maybe that would be OK.

I'm going to call the bhwt coordinator tomorrow and book our chooks. I'm sure i'll get all the info I need from him. The next re-homing day with ex-batts available (the one in April is all booked up) is in May and planned for the weekend of my birthday - it's fate..

I had to keep my two chicks locked away in the Elgu house for the first night, the breeder said that it helps them to know where they roost.

It's very difficult as all you want to do is open the egg port and have a look!! But it did the trick they went in on their own OK on the second night and they are only little! I was very proud!! :D:D:D

I also took the information on the BWHT website to mean 'not freeranging' rather than fully locked in... I guess people will have different set ups too, maybe some people have enclosed runs with roosting and nesting areas that can't be closed off from the rest of the run...

I was thinking of putting them into the eglu itself for the first night, then letting them out in the run in the morning...

Today's the day, today's the day...

I'm off to run around the dining table a few times while waving my arms around and yelling to the top of my voice, to try and control the excitement...

Setting off in an hour to go and pick daughter from her friend's house, take her to tennis lesson, then straight off to pick the chooks...

I'm so excited I bet I'll forget the box or the map... better put them in the car now...

Ooooooooooooooh.... (runs around waving arms, watched in total disbelief by five cats who think their human has finally lost it!!)

Ziggy are you getting yours from Worcester today?

That's where we're getting ours from today too - :D:D:D

Very excited and can't wait and even though I've had the laydees for nearly two years I'm still feeling nervous about getting them and worrying that I get everything right.

By 2pm I'll have Marjorie and Audrey added to the flock

And ours are here too :D:dance:

Just taken some photo's and will upload them in a mo.

Margot is getting on with the day to day but to say that Geri is a little put out is an understatement :!: She's been squarking about since the new girls were put in the Eglu run, and had a bit of a go at one of them, but the ex batt stood tall and just had a go back

This is gonna be interesting

I bet they are having a good scratch around already :D

They are - they started scratching and pecking about as soon as they were in the run - they've attacked a few grapes and are quite happy pootling about. They haven't been inside the Eglu yet, but are covering some ground inside the run

It's just fascinating seeing them return to nature - even tho this is one of the first times they've had the freedom.

They look lovely Andrew... what an exciting day, isn't it? :)

I have some pictures too, but put them in the gallery... is there any way I can post a link to the album? Can't find a link to copy from in the gallery...

The day was fantastic... so please let me announce the arrival in our green eglu of:

- Pecky, chosen at the rescue by Suki

- Nicky, who chose us at the rescue, she ran to the carrier we'd just put on the floor, and we thought we just had to have her... she has some feathers missing around her neck, so Suki called her Nicky (neck... necky... nicky... get it?? )

- Lucky... cause she's the first one that Claret picked up for us, and she is a Lucky chicken coming to live with us today...

A huge thank you to everyone at the BHWT... everybody was so, so friendly, picking the girls was a fantastic experience... It was great meeting Claret and AMO, and seeing two familiar faces (well, not quite familiar faces I guess, but familiar people from here) made the day even more special...

I'm a very happy Ziggy, and Suki is a very happy Suki...

The girls are doing well, they're in a good state, and they seem a little surprised and hesitant, but quite happy pacing the run... Mac and Nugget bok bok at them from the cube, but it doesn't seem to worry them...
