i am having a gold barnevelder in a few weeks has anyone got any info on them or anyone know what they are like. i am excited

There's a full two pages in my chicken book - it says they are the only breed non-chicken people know about(really?) An averagely heavy chicken red ears & around eyes. It doesn't actually mention Gold - white, double laced & blue, plus some dark brown. Famed as an excellent layer & dark brown eggs - as dark as Maran's apparently. Poor flyers.

They have very attractive double-laced feathers apparently. Aren't they supposed to be quite, er .....(how to put this politely) .....broad birds?!

I got a Barnevelder yesterday, only about 8 weeks old - she is gorgeous!! Full of character, she actually let me stroke her head today, very gently.

 

I read up on them before I decided on her, they are large breed of bird, very docile, not brilliant layers but one of the few purebreeds to lay in the winter I believe. Mine is a double laced, she will have black and goldy feathers, she is not much to look at at the moment though as she still has a few baby feathers/fluff. She looks a bit like a little hedgehog!

 

I don't think you will regret it, at the breeders they had a Barnevelder that was 14 years old!! She was beautiful.

Ros, I just noticed from another post of yours that you had a Barnvelder - they look gorgeous - I fancied one of those but am going to have to settle for hybrids around here I think. The breeder we liked hasn't really got any pure breeds other than a few Rhodebars.

Hi Andrea, I'm sure whatever chooks you get you will love them, I am overwhelmed how lovely they are and how interesting, they do funny little chickeny things, this afternoon they were scratching round for about two hours in the same spot, have no idea what they were looking for!!

 

They also managed to get hold of a massive fat slug, (bear in mind they are only 8 / 10 weeks old). The slug was laid on it's side in their run and you could see 2 beak-sized pecks out of him, like they'd both had a try and thought - eerrrggghh gross!!

mine will be 8 weeks old when i get her.

a friend of mine hatched her, so i have been watching her grow up, she has very beautiful feathers already and she is only 4 weeks old

i am glad you are pleased with your chooks, they are so entertaining

How sweet!! Mine lost a feather yesterday, it had quite an intricate lacey gold and black pattern on. At the moment she is all legs and beak, she has a very sturdy pair of legs on her for one so young

I don't think you would get many of those into an Eglu.

I have a double laced Barnevelder and she's smaller than my bluebelles but that's because of the time of year she hatched and was a grower during the winter and because of that you end up with smaller birds.

She is very pretty Liz & those eggs look fab - what a great deep brown colour.
