Jen&Rog
Apologies if this question has been asked many times before, but how can I find a vet that has some experience with chickens? My local vet doesn't know what's wrong with one of my hens and I'm starting to get worried (I suspect peritonitis). I've had no luck searching for a vet online; does anyone have a good vet in the N.W Surrey/E. Berkshire/W. London area? Many thanks, Jennie & poorly Patti
Cazjohn
I've had my girls for a year and still haven't found one near me (I'm in Woking if anyone can help! If you're in Egham try Rokers in Staines 01784 452 048 - I Think!
Egluntyne
Is East Sheen too far? **Look here**.
The Dogmother
Just call round all the vets in your area and ask if they have a poultry specialist.
Mrs Frugal
You could try emailing Barbara@omlet.co.uk as she's got a list of poultry vets or ones recommended on the forum by chicken keepers.
Jen&Rog
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I dashed straight over to the Sheen vet this morning (C.J. Hall) because Patti was really unwell. She has got peritonitis, and I've got a £300 vet bill! I'll write a proper post later about the condition as others may experience it and I now feel like an expert. Anyway fingers crossed my poor chook bounces back after quite a traumatic day all round. Mrs Frugal
Crikey ! That's a heck of a bill! I hope they've made her better!
The Dogmother
Blimey! That's a bit steep!!!
Christian
Glad that she has seen a vet but blimey! Babs had peritonitis 4 times and had 3 lots of antibiotic tablets and jabs and a week's stay at the vet whilst they drained her swollen abdomen twice a day and that bill was £100. What did they do for £300?? The important thing is that she has been treated and will hopefully be better soon.
Jen&Rog
I think I'll take her to your vet next time!! They gave her an endoscopy, tested the poo, drained her tum (half a pint - yuck), gave her several injections, and a few drugs for me to give her over the next week. I have a feeling he is the most expensive vet ever, but Patti may not have pulled through today... Anyway - could you let me know who your vet is, I don't mind a long-ish journey if it'll save me a few hundred quid next time!
Egluntyne
*gulp* At least she has had the right treatment. 1/2 pint of gunk must have made her feel terribly poorly.
The Dogmother
Unfortunately there's no recommendation that they won't get it again - the hen will always be prone to peritonitis and may not lay again either. Poor love, she must have been pretty uncomfortable
