BHWT - Waiting lists

Recommended Posts

Buffie - there seems to be particular difficulties for those of us wanting to rehome ex-batts in Scotland. I know that some Scots have gone to North of England to get theirs, but this is not an option for those of us who do not have own transport and are relying on friends/relatives for lift - it would be a big ask to ask them to take us to England. Any chance of a large batch being transported North of the Border for Scottish distribution for those of us already on Scottish waiting list?

I told one of my daughters friends grandmothers I was collecting some ex batts. She warned me about lice and before I could open my mouth and say anymore she said her friend had given her a few to kill and pluck for her. I thought she was being helpful and knowledgeable but NO. It goes on more than you want to think about I'm afraid. Clare x

Thats sick, these people need shooting, and im not joking.

How DARE they do that? I tell you its a good job i dont know where the evil twits live. I don't think i could contain myself!

In my post about the ex batts I would like to adopt I mentioned that it would be great if somehow :? some could be brought up North for collection.

I would happily travel for 5 hours South to Glasgow or Edinburgh to collect them. I have travelled to Edinburgh to get 4 Bantams. Of course I would rather adopt closer to home and donate the 10 hours petrol money to the BHWT :D

I would love some big girls especially now I am moving to a place with a large garden and I would rather have ex batts.

Why is there so much aggression and blood lust on the forum at the mo? :?

What has been described is absolutely abominable but how does this help?

Let's get back to being pleasant and friendly and setting an example.

I'll be at Ian and Mollie's rescue on Saturday.

Covered in chicken poop and happy to be rescuing yet more girls.

Hey, Claret, I'm getting my three new girls from the Mollie and Ian rescue on Saturday... :D

Do you mean you are helping with the rescue, or getting more birds?

Agree Egluntine, Peace and Love is good :) I also agree about the 50p. thing, I didn't realise that was the charge for a chicken. I think it should be

£3 at least unless somebody really couldn't afford it. Battersea charge £55 for a dog, and I think that's about right.

TBH Tessa, if they can't afford a fiver for a chook then they shouldn't be thinking about getting one as they wouldn't be able to afford the veterinary care (should it be needed) or all the other parerphenalia that we all know you need to care for your girls properly.

I know Quorn is all free range :D

Errr, I think you'll find that Quorn is a vegetarian meat substitute.... it's made from a sort of funghi, Laura

http://www.quorn.co.uk/CMSPage.aspx?ssbid=6

Clare funnily enough Quorn does indeed contain egg, contacted them a couple of years ago, and now for quite some time it's been free range egg :D Not just pies etc but mince, pieces etc. :D:D

I would also like anyone with details of 'our' ex batts going to anywhere but free range retirement to please contact me

We deliberately do not put a large monetary value on the girls, for various reasons BUT do carry out stringent checks. If anyone gets through the net we'd like to know please.

Donations are generous at collection and that is appreciated :)

Sincere appologies if i may have offended you, i am a passionate person and i believe, treat as you expect to be treated, or that's what ive been brought up to believe. These twits that are doing that to a chicken thats been trhough enough to deserve to have done to them, what they would do to a poorly, featherbare, stressed chicken.

I agree for peace and love, but not in this case. I won't mention it again, but i do not see why i should be told to get back to being pleasant and friendly , i wasn't supporting what these people are doing!

Laura, at the very least we should take some sage and onion stuffing and visit them. Do as you would be done by, eh hun ;)

I seriously do hope the BHWT crack down on this sort of activity, it's upsetting to think of it and I can understand why you feel the way you do.

As a mummy to 5 ex batts they have brought so much joy into our lifes - and I watch them in wonder as they trot about the garden on some mission or other - Just how any one could think it okay to keep them in a barren cage.

So I am on a mission myself now. I feel every one should keep a few hens in their garden they make top pets and don't take up much time (if you don't spend time just gazing and laughing, but just caring for their needs)

Maybe more hens would get eaten by foxes if we all kept them in our gardens rather than cages - but surely a week in the sunshine than a year in a barren cage.

I too think the 50p is a small donation to BHWT and gave more for my ladiez, but I wouldn't like the cost to put anyone off if they were already on a tight budget - so maybe leaving it too the individual and what they can afford is the right thing.

Would be shocked at some one taking an exbatt for the table - mine hardly had enough meat for a pot of stock! ( it's ok we are a vegie household! ) I think after 72 weeks in a barren cage they deserve a fitting retirement in gardens the length and breadth of Britain.

Loving my chickens from Adele's rescue last month and can't believe how easy it all is - having the best experience watching the ladiez get more beautifull every day - and laying an egg a day each - what remarkable creatures.

Bit of a ramble there -

Susie (now know as that mad chicken woman)

(oops I wish the forum had spell checker hahahha)

I get my 6 exbatts from Adele on Saturday and can't wait. Am currentlly in a panic though to make sure the run is finished and have spent another 5 hours timber treating wood today. My right arm and hand are numb and I've no nails left but I just know it will be worth it :)

I also think the 50p charge is far too small an amount.

Ive just read some of the posts about the charge for each exbat ie that it should be more than 50p. I agree - before I knew it was 50p each I had already decided that it should be about £10 each.

I'm expecting them to be in really poor condition - am I right?

I've also decided which vet to register with in case of emergency. Did anyone have to take them to the vet soon after they got their exbats or do they just get stronger and stronger each day?

we were relatively lucky, ours were just weak, disorientated and lacking feathers. It all depends what farm they've come from but the BHWT usually do a health check and keep back any that are too poorly to rehome and the co-ordinator will care for what they call 'the poorlies'. We adopted Bea who came under that category but our coordinator had cared for her 6 months before she came to us.

ours just went from strength to strength but you do have to steel yourself, just in case and be prepared. If you do suspect any illness you can post in the chicken clinic here and you'll usually get a speedy reply and then you can decide if a trip to the vets is needed.

They can be in varying condition ranging from very poor and featherless to not bad at all.

There are lots of pics on the forum and heaps of info **here**.

It might be a good idea to register with a vet just to be prepared.

In general they go from strength to strength once they have got a good home.

Occasionally people can be unlucky though, but that is very much the exception rather than the rule.

Buffie I have just emailed the Lincolnshire rescue group again as I would really like some more exbatts ...I contacted them ages ago but I know they have been really busy with the sudden interest in the chickens. If you are put on a waiting list do they email back to notify you do you know please?

Got your PM but wondered if a public post may help others. Indeed you will be contacted and as I said in my first post the lists have been affected by wheat and slaughter dates but you can always follow up but please at reasonable hours as we're all volunteers :D

Hope you get your news soon

As far as Scotland is concerned we are in talks with farms, so beyond BHWT control at the moment, the girls can travel some distance but you'd need to discuss details with your nearest co-ord.

Just to let you know I'm not really involved directly in the rehoming, as I work in the research areas and communications for BHWT, so can't really speak for rescue co-ords, sorry. :)

re condition of the girls - mine were fine, I think they had been at Adele's for a few days but apart from a few bald patches, and one did limp for a couiple of days, they appear strong and healthy - and after a few weeks are getting SO cheeky ! Pushing to get out of the run, all three snatching grapes from my fingers, one was standing on the grub....we had our first sunny day since I got them on Monday, and it was such a joy to see them in the sun, scratching and rolling about.

I was surpirised at the 50p donation, I gave more, I guess it is a balance, they don't want to put people on tight budgets off. But i find it really upsetting that some people are abusing the BHWT and of course, the poor girls.

It was good to read all this, I had been wondering what to give on Saturday when picking up our girls, now I have a better idea...

50p per girl isn't much, and while I can understand trying to not put off people on a tight budget, I also agree with Poet, that if people can't afford a (reasonable) donation, then can they really afford providing for the animal?

3 days to go, 3 days to go, 3 days to go... chanting that like a mantra...

We were booked for a rescue in June, but then got a call a few weeks ago about this one on Saturday and got brought forward...
