buffie
Hi Everyone Just wanted to thank all our re-homers, on waiting lists around the UK, for their patience and continued support of BHWT. It’s really appreciated and I’ve spoken to Jane, our founder, and we agreed it would be worthwhile me updating you. It’s tempting, I know, to get ex batts from sources other than BHWT but when you choose our ex batts you support our ongoing work, the big picture of change in British egg production. You can also be sure of our positive 'pro British farmers' approach. As for the wait, well you’ll all be aware of wheat price hikes and these have meant farmers have kept their birds longer and we also have to work to slaughter dates, which can and do change. This year we’ve re-homed over 13,000 ex batts, more than ever before, thanks to people like you. Some of you may fancy sourcing your own, to speed up the process, but I’d really like to encourage you to pass any details to BHWT rather than approach a farm yourself, via email info@bhwt.org.uk or PM me please. We’ll do the rest, increasing the chance of hundreds if not thousands of girls getting a free range retirement as we're well practiced at building relationships with farms, that can sometimes take months. Thanks again for your patience and support Buffie x

Suzie
That is amazing. What a fantastic job they do. I've spent time recently reading the BHWT website and had no idea how many manufactured products used battery eggs. They obviously do an important job spreading the word about battery hens and theur plight aswell as rehoming them. We've just ordered 3. They have a rehoming day this weekend but all the hens are accounted for. I'll have to wait until the end of May before we can get our new girls (unless anyone doesn't turn up this weekend). Am very excited
buffie
Well done Suzie and please keep on checking your labels, that's my department You'll love your girls and I waited nearly 3 years for mine so not long for you BBx
Pookylover
When I see my girls out in the sun today it brings about a very big grin! I totally understand this feeling! I have had my girls now for 8 days and it is wonderful to see them becoming chickens again. The BHWT do such a wonderful job and without them I wouldn't have my girls! I can see people becoming dissapointed with waiting lists BUT they are totally worth the wait. Clare x
Suzie
Buffie is there anyway we can check if products use battery eggs? Or will it just be labelled that the eggs is free range. It's the same with chicken when eating out. I only buy organic or free range chicken at home, but it's really hard to do the same when eating at restaurants unless you avoid chicken all together. buffie
Ah great news Em and lovely replies, thanks and I'll pass on all the good wishes Suzie if you want me to check any particular products just ask and also look at our links to RSPCA and Veg society approved. If you look at cop op and waitrose they clearly label, all M&S are free range egg. Tesco finest are all now free range egg. By all means ask the manufacturers and pass on any info please BBx

Suzie
I'm on the waiting list for 3 girls this weekend, but I think realistically it'll be the end of May before we get them. It must be a heartbreaking but very rewarding job rehoming all those chickens.
chickenlass
Buffie I have just emailed the Lincolnshire rescue group again as I would really like some more exbatts ...I contacted them ages ago but I know they have been really busy with the sudden interest in the chickens. If you are put on a waiting list do they email back to notify you do you know please?

The Dogmother
Ahh, I though that you were talking about Quorn as a product, rather than the Quorn Range Laura. I know Quorn is all free range Shame, I was having such fun imagining little baby Quorns freeranging
Guest
well done to all at the bhwt and the many other volunteers who help out at the rescues I'm glad we got our girls before the rush just had some people round today to see our girls and ask questions as they're getting some girls from Adele in rossendale in May. I really enjoyed showing them our girls and answering their questions.
fairy&cake
LOL Claret! Your so funny I didnt really explain what i meant. Oh well, i have now When is that Cadbury cream egg being released thats free range, Ross was talking to the founder of BHWT when she called here about it in Feb and i havent heard anything since. Egluntyne
Well done to the BHWT. My ex -batts are a joy and delight...they have completely won me over. If I can be controversial Buffie, I think the BHWT should ask for more than 50p per hen. I gave what I thought was an acceptable donation significantly in excess of £1.50 for the three....I think it wouldn't be unreasonable to charge a fiver per bird....I suppose some would balk at that, but certainly a couple of quid would not be unreasonable. I stood open mouthed when some-one at the rescue I got my girls from held out their hand and waited for change from a fiver for their 4 girls. Maybe it's just me Anyway...once more....well done the BHWT.

If you charged at least a fiver then at least you know they wouldn't be going onto somebody's plate and it would deter those less serious. We gave £10 for our 4 girls anyway and have donated since. I think 50p is too cheap too. Well done Egluntine for raising that point!
Pookylover
I told one of my daughters friends grandmothers I was collecting some ex batts. She warned me about lice and before I could open my mouth and say anymore she said her friend had given her a few to kill and pluck for her. I thought she was being helpful and knowledgeable but NO. It goes on more than you want to think about I'm afraid. Clare x
