Seagazer
Hi Jackipoppies, Wow - are your really going to get 3.8 cubes a year!!! How many chickens can you fit in? Lucky you! I had a fantastic time at Dymchurch at the weekend, thank you. Unfortunately I got a bit burnt though - very naughty (just watching a bit on This Morning about moles). Good luck to everyone trying to stop smoking.

Tessa the Duchess
I didn't bother reading this thread as I am not an ex-smoker. I am a smoker. However I don't smoke tailer made fags I roll my own, old hippie, and I roll with liquorice papers, which makes them very mellow Somebody, maybe Jacquipoppies, mentioned the whole ritual of taking a cigarette out of the packet, lighting it etc., etc., and it is a bit like that for me, tobacco, rolling paper, rolling it etc., roll your own go out ALL the time, so one is constantly re-lighting them, another ritual I have never tried to give up, or even thought about it very much. Weirdly I can't stand the smell of ready made fags, people smoke in my house( but "Ooops, word censored!"ody is allowed to smoke around my grandson) I hate it when people smoke regular fags everything smells of their cigarettes, you don't get that with roll your owns. My heartiest congrats to everyone that has given up the evil weed, and I wish the people giving up all the strength and will power they need. Tessa My son smokes roll-ups as well and the difference between those and commercial ciggies is quite marked! I still tell him to stop breathing near me though I presume it is all the added chemicals in them which you don't get when using tobacco? Good Luck to all those trying to give up - I've never smoked, but any addiction is difficult to stop.
Cinnamon
The first thing I did when I met my Hubby all those years ago was to tell him it was the cigs or me. Happily he chose me I am afraid I am very anti smoking & really hate the smell of cigarette smoke. Having been brought up in a nightclub, both of my parents were very heavy smokers & the smell was around all the time. I really cannot tolerate it at all now - it makes me feel really ill. I do know that it is horribly hard to give up smoking. My Dad did it & has now not smoked for many years. My Mum remarried another very heavy smoker & has now only given up due to the fact that she is in long term care following a terrible head injury,& can no longer smoke. Its ironic that because of her injury her physical health is now better than its ever been. I wish anyone who is trying to give up all the luck, determination & strength in the world

Sarah B
SarahB are you out there? Please let us know how you are doing....even if youv'e slipped a bit! Not the end of the world....took me several attempts' including hypnotherapy That worked for 6 weeks until someone gave me 200 fags for Xmas and I thought just one wouldn't hurt Hello Pepes! Well! I have to admit that I have not YET totally stopped because in the book Alan Carr says to smoke till you get to the end. I was a 20 - 25 a day smoker but at present I'm having 3 or 4, usually when I'm reading. I only have about 40 pages left so I really will kick it. The weird thing is I don't 'enjoy' the cigarette whilst I am smoking it anymore and I think as the book says I never enjoyed it anyway!!!! I went 2 days in the week with no grubby fags at all but when I got to the bit in the book where he says inhale 6 times I bought some I need to read it more frequently I think as I am getting weak again. Sarah B
I smoked at least 20 a day for a good 20 years. I'm another Alan Carr devotee! Isnt he the bloke from the friday night project? Different Alan Carr. The sad thing is the writer of the book gave up in the 80's but still died of lung cancer through passive smoking from the clinics he ran full of active smokers. It is a blummin' horrible habit.

Stevie
I quit smoking in February 2006 for my health and feel much better for it! I havent anymore money in my pocket though! Keep at it because smoking really is a complete waste of time and money.
jackiepoppies
Glad to see you back Sarah I know absolutely nothing about this 'book'. so am totally unable to comment on its effectiveness, but whatever works for you is great. The only comment I can make, is that it's very easy to 'subcontract' ideas. ie any book says 'choose a date', 'don't be stressed' move house, get divorced etc. etc. etc! What I think...[and it's only my opinion...]is that when you choose.not to smoke at that present moment in time, then thats the right time for you. Don't feel guilty if you slip, I don't, and it took me 46 years! Jackiexxx ps. keep us posted!
Basset
Well done for making the big decision to give up. I gave up 8 years ago and it is fantastic. The best thing for me is that when I am socialising with people I don't worry about people getting too close and smelling the after effects of smoking - whilst I was smoking I felt like I had a permanent exclusion zone around me. theherd123
Down side of not smoking. When your husband does and you can no longer bear kissing him Could this not be used as blackmail? Give up or no more snogs! A friend of mine who is quite a heavy smoker was given some new tablets called 'Champix' - they worked really well for her
Sarah B
Hi Sarah B, Just thought I'd see if you've finished that book yet and get an update on how you're doing. Erm no I havent even read more of the book. I'm being weak and I know I am. Still on 3 or 4 a day but having a very stressful week at work, was in London today and Manchester tomorrow - excuses I know.

jackiepoppies
I hate to say this Sarah, but you know there'll always be something. If you really want to give up, just do it You know she's right Sarah 3 or 4 a day won't help 'cos you're always in the back of your mind thinking about how much time you've allowed yourself until the next one! When I knew I didn't have the money to get any more fags, I stretched my last packet out to one every 2 hours...until I had my last one 10 minutes early 'cos I was fed up with watching the clock Just go for it....you did a couple of days before.....just CHOOSE to do that again and then extend it! ps take all the ashtrays in the house, wash em up and put em out of sight GOOD LUCK We're all behind you, pushin an shovin in the right direction. xxxx
Rona
Of course as everyone says the best thing is to just do it and don't smoke any more ciggies. Every day will become easier and it won't be long before you progress from someone who is giving up smoking to being an ex-smoker. BUT If you don't feel ready yet don't throw all the progress you've make so far out the window - just make sure you never ever smoke more than 3 or 4 a day again. You could also try allowing yourself a ciggie as a reward (but only if its one of your 3 or 4 a day allowance of course ). eg I'll have a ciggie when I've cleaned the house, done the ironing, darned the socks etc. Anything that will mean you might think "Oh what the heck I really don't want a ciggie that much!" Just don't give up giving up
