Egg with no shell and laying outside!!

Recommended Posts

Hi

One of my girls stated laying last week and all is fine. She lays in the nest box in the eglu first thing in the morning.

My other girl has layed an egg outside the door to the eglu 4 days ago but I have not seen her lay again.

Today I came home to find an egg with no shell on it laid outside the door to the eglu.

I have had a pot with shell and grit out in their run since I got them?

What could be wrong?

Thanks

This is nothing to worry about....it takes a while for their egg laying tackle to settle down sometimes. If they have access to shell and grit then I'm sure it's just down to this. If you look at other posts in this section you'll see it's quite common with new layers.

One of my girls starting laying soft eggs last week after six months of laying normal eggs. After three days she's settled down to normal duties again!

I am still getting softies from both girls. I have tried cooking egg shells and putting this in their food as well but it has not helped. I am wondering if it may be because they are eating too much grass and not enough of their layers pellets. I am getting softies every other day. Please can anyone help?

I don't want to put anyone off but I have tried the lot!

Every type of grit, eggshell, limestone flour, liquid additives etc etc.

Still I get shelless eggs in partic' from one hen, and very rarely a second one. They seem to come in spates although I have a strong suspicion a prowling fox may be the root cause.

I think all you can do is try some of the additives and very definitely grit and then leave them to it.

Why not confine them to their run until mid afternoon for a few days, so that they fill up on pellets and see if it makes a difference.

Too much "other" food can crowd out the optimum nutrition provided by the pellets and could be part of the problem.

Limestone flour added to the pellets works wonders I have found.

**Davinova C** or **Zolcal D** added to the water can help. They are liquid calcium supplements, with added minerals.
