 Hi all

We've lost our little Spice  I went out to give them their tea before which was Spicy's favorite, sweet corn, cabbage and spinach, she enjoyed he tea as usual. Grabbed the biggest piece of spinach and went charging off with it hoping for everyone to run after her and play chase, but as usual she spent so much time running round that she nearly missed out all together on her tea .

*Sigh* I went out with our little duckling for a walk (some of you may know I hatched a single duckling) and I was enjoying throwing blue berries for him and I looked over at the run to see Spice lying there .

I put the duckling back in his brooder, and went out to investigate, hoping she was just having a little rest, but as I got closer it was obvious she was dead :cry::cry:.

It's just such a shock, she was running round really happily about an hour before with her tea and she's dead.

Her little comb and wattles where blue, so I assume she had an unexpected heart attack, it may be better that way as she didn't suffer and didn't go to sleep hungry and had her favorite tea.

I feel bad as I haven't been out to see them much today, but I did get a cuddle from her this morning, she hated cuddles though and got mud all down my new jacket. But as usual all she had to do was look at me and make that funny little clucking noise she did and she was forgiven.

She also laid an egg today, which I'm thinking of keeping.

She will be greatly missed, her lovely little character would make anyone smile.

Rest in peace Spicey AKA Fatty (she was quite a big, greedy girl)

So sad, she is the spit of my Rhode Star, Lily, even down to the tiny headgear. The personalities are similar too - Lily is always first at the treats and the friendliest of my hens.

At least she had a peaceful end and was not taken by a predator.

hugs, Jo

Wow, thank you all for your responses, I wasn't expecting that!

She was such a lovely chicken, absolutely rubbish layer though  but her fantastic personality made up for it.

She never liked cuddles, but every now and then she would let me sneak one in. I'm glad she let me have a cuddle this morning. She also laid me a lovely egg, which happens once in a blue moon.

She had a nice normal day today, I'm glad she was in no pain and it was very sudden, but I will miss her so much.

She was only a year old too, if that :?.

It won't be the same tomorrow, but I'm going to give all the girls big cuddles and take some photo's of them as I don't have many.

Thank you all so much for your support. I really appreciate it and you've all made me feel so much better.

xxxx

P.S Am I the only one who makes their chickens tea every night?

Hi

So sorry to hear about the loss of Spice, I haven't even got my hens yet but sure I will be just as atttached so can only imagine how upsetting it must be.

Hope you get lots of cuddles from your others girls tomorow.

nope! me too.

my girls will only eat "chopped" treats so every night without fail they have their chopped assortment with a scattering of seeds and a light dusting of raisins.:lol:

love 'em though.

:( Sorry to hear that - but what a way to go, chasing bits of spinach one minute, and then just out like a light. I'd wish that for all my girls.

That's very true - not a bad way to go!

Sorry to hear about Spice though

Oh and I also get tea ready for my girls every night - all chopped up nicely for them on a plate.

Ah bless you, so sorry to read about your loss.. Sounds like Spice was a lovely character & will be sorely missed. They each bring their own love don't they. Glad she didnt seem to suffer, may she now be in eternal chicken bliss whether in rest or peaceful joy.

You've reminded me, how funny when we first got the chickens yes i did make them their daily tea .. .but of late i've been lazy . .cooking their veggies but not taking them out to them . .its been soo cold & wet . .but yes i must do that again instead of saving treats ready cooked for the following day.
