I have been up the hospital all evening with my son, he went to cricket tonight (I was at college) I get a phone call from hubs to say can I come home as son has possibly broken his thumb!

 

Unbeknown to us l'efthanded son' wore 'right handed' younger sons batting gloves and therefore the padded protection was not on the correct hand!! resulting in fractuered and crushed thumb. even doctor called him a plonker!

 

he is now most likely going to lose his nail, on antibiotics for a week because it's bleeding, and has a fracture that needs assessing by our gp on friday. They said we could go to the fracture clinic but will wait hours and they will only do the same as the gp..

 

I give up today...

thanks, yes a plonker indeed, he normally uses the club gloves, but for some reason he didn't I am going to buy him his own set and super glu them to him!! well maybe a tad extreme but he'll be aware this isn't to happen again. Although I dont think he wants that

 

No no exams he's only 12, although I have contacted the school because when he returns he cannot write, I dont know if they can supply him with a laptop for a short while, or am I expecting miracles there??

 

I was up all night, he was moaning in pain in his sleep, although I had dosed him up with pain killers just before he went to bed, as they advised this would give him a good nights sleep... I had forgotten to ask what would give me one!!.

 

Off school today, as he's just in too much pain, so that means me off work.. so that means more time to see chooks.. so these things do have some benefits

Oh thats nasty, DH is just recovering from a broken finger. Unfortunately they seem to take a long time to be right again.

Theres only only one of my fingers left now that i havent broken. I can't imagine what a fracture must feel like, OUCH!

OOOOOOW Thumbs are so painful worse than fingers to break. I am sitting here typing this with my left thumbnail still black and purple after hitting it with a hammer he has my empathy and sympathy.

Thanks He is doing ok, in pain, but he has is laying on the sofa watching tv with it raised (on back of sofa to reduce swelling) as they advised this.

 

He has had to take the max pain relief I can give him, but he's still in pain, he cant walk around because he says the vibration of walking goes through his thumb so I am being 'waitress and dogsbody.

 

I hate to think how long this is going to take to heal, because he is a goalkeeper (luckily out of season at moment) and he injured the finger beside this thumb a while back and it still hurts, although it's more the tendon damage he did back then I think.

The doctor looked at his finger whilst we was there last night, I thought get two for the price of one whilst I was there.. she said he had a lump (did give proper name cant think what she said) on his tendon, where it was damaged, and this 'should' go away with time.

 

Poor thing.. he does look sorry for himself.

He has my sympathy, i trapped the end of my finger in a drawer the other day only a slight mark to show for it but it throbbed for a couple of days, so i can just imagine how painful his thumb is

One of my staff fractured his thumb end of last year and the doctor signed him off for 8 weeks and he then had a couple of months physio as well

oh blimey! that doesn't sound good. Son was most put out that he was going to lose his nail... bearing in mind my son has recently had 4 front teeth out to make way for other teethto be moved/brace etc etc.. he is more concerned over a finger nail...

Yes the throbbing continues, I think thats the horrible thing for him. They coudn't splint his thumb in the way they wanted because he is allergic to elastaplast and thats how they hold the split on apparantly.. so they cleverly worked around it... and splinted it and used a thin bandage type gauze to strap it into place... it's very secure so I guess they know their stuff.

Ouch, poor thing, but what a 'nana!

 

I broke my finger in the car door some years back - they strapped it up, but then I couldn't do anything at all, being right handed. So I took the strapping off - it healed fine and now only aches occasionally. I'm sure that he will be fine, and won't do that again in a hurry.

The school have called me back and they will arrange some support for him when he goes back into class, be it someone sitting and writing for him, or a laptop. That's pretty good of them.

 

She wants him to wear a sling though...which wont please him :roll:I'll tell him it'll give him more sympathy from the girls...

so much for me thinking the guy who did my sons splint knew his stuff... it ravelled down my sons thumb so far it was around his wrist!..

 

I rang the hospital and they said come straight back in, so took him there and saw the same initial doc we saw yesterday she pondered over what else they can use that didn't involve elastaplast... in the end they used a plastic shield type splint that goes right over his toe... he looks quite odd.. held on with white tape instead

 

She also wasn't pleased with man last night not having put son in a sling.. so.. he's .. well he's got a sling, in this splint (hopefully it'll last) has to refrain from all physical activities for about 3 weeks and longer if necessary. Please can I come and live with one of you, he'll be a nightmare to live with..

The sling will help keep the swelling down, so it is important that he wears it.......at least for a day or two.

yes thanks, I have told him this and he's wearing it, he noticed a huge improvement in the throbbing when he wears it, I guess the blood isn't all in that area now.

When we were building our summerhouse, OH decided to demonstrate the safeness of nailguns by putting his thumb against it....yep, you guessed it, a nail straight through his thumb

 

I offered to get the pliers, seriously, but then we ended up at the hospital, very embarassed. He didn't get away with making the most of it though, we still had a summerhouse to build

About ten minutes once we got back from the hospital

 

We only had two days to build the summerhouse and its one of those quite big ones. We'd only got up to the bottom of the first window so we had to plough on really.

 

I've never let him live it down either, he'll kill me for telling you lot
