lozza_9
Hi All We collected two ex-bat chickens yesterday, boy was I shocked at some of the other chickens they had, our two too have feathers missing but not too bad. They are presently in our Kitchen waiting to go outisde in there new new ( chicken palace ) We are kepping the girls seperate from our other two chickens for about 3 weeks. Both has laid eggs but one of the chickens laid an egg and the other one stood on it and broke is this a problem I should keep an eye on, I am going to try and check for eggs very often and remove ASAP. Any other advice very welcome. Loz

theherd123
Firstly congratulations to the both of you! Ex-battery girls are so rewarding to own. Dont worry at all about one of your chookies standing on the egg. In the battery farm the girls never get to see what they lay so probably didnt realise what it was. Eventually they will get the hang of laying in the nesting box but this can take some time. I rescued 4 more girls about 2 weeks ago and 3 of them still havent got the hang of where to lay! If you have any more questions please just post away
SLK69
Hi congrats on the rescue - they are so rewarding to have - and in no time at all I bet they will 'remember' all their natural chooky behaviours - mine did within a week and got the strength to get up the ladder - and lay their eggs in the nest box - It is hard to match the current 'confident' chooks with the nervous wrecks that arrived. p.s for confident read, arrogant, bossy, food stealing, carpet pooping pests ! chili pepper
I helped at the essex rescue on Saturday and to say their natural behaviors return quickly is somewhat of an understatement We were unpacking them as quickly as we could being worried that they were stressed and VERY hot in the crates, only to put them into shaded pens to find them seeking out the tiniest bit of sun and sunbathing There was also one hen who within minutes of being free decided to dustbathe in the bowl of layers mash They never fail to surprise. Good luck both of you with your new girls, you will wonder what you did BC (before chickens).
Egluntyne
Congratulations to you both. I love my ex-batts. They are such characters. You will get such a buzz watching them go from strength to strength.
lozza_9
Hi Thanks all The first night they stayed in our kitchen and I am sure they slept standing up all night. went into there new home on sunday morning and just spent the day watching them and making sure they where ok. Lola spent most of day in the sleeping area and Charlie spent all day just sitting down. They are now eating anf drinking, walking around and both sleeping in the correct area. I am leaving them alone, just checking on eggs and food and water. I think they might be going free range tomorrow for a little while - if we can get them out Lorraine
