Hellooo Dear Omleteers,

 

Hope the sun is still shining for you all.

 

I am sure i've read somewhere before about some great idea of what to put around the base of the extension runs to keep the hemcore in!!

Please could anybody remind me , or any ideas most welcomed. Dear hubby is going to get on his industrial swewing maching again to make something removeable to put around the base to stop all of the mess!!!

Since spotting a fox, they havent been free ranging from dawn til dusk & ooh what a diffrence it makes to the mess of the hemcore.

Try gravel boards for fencing.They're normally in 6ft lenghts,cost couple of quid each and cos they're pressure treated-they'll last for years.

skirting boards and some railway sleepers around the outside would also work.

Any boards will do, we used skirting boards from B & Q and we painted them blue to match the eglu!! (atleast I did - my husband thought I was mad ).

 

I attached them with cable ties to the mesh of the run - you can get these from B & Q too!

funny because hubby has just fitted some kick boards around the bottom for this exact purpose today.

We had thought sleepers all the way around outside would work..nope! plus the rain bounces on them and into the run.

Or log roll, which can be attached to the run - just be careful it is secured - the plank keeping the bedding in is what caught our Rye's foot last week.

We put some bamboo edging panels down the side and this has stopped the hemcore being flicked onto the grass. It stays alot neater now. They have a stake built in each end so you can just hammer it into the ground. Looks nice too. They were around £6.99 per panel and we used two for ours.

The cheapest and best way I think has to be gravel boards as stated above. Just a couple of £ each, don't get from B&Q etc get them from a builders merchants they will be half the price. Get some 1 1/2 inch bolts and wing nuts and off you go. Bolt gravel boards to the out side along the sides and back and then on the inside at the front to you can still open the door. Using skirting boards won't work if your chickens like mine like to kick it around most skirting is only 4 inches high where as gravel boards are 6 inches and pressure treated and skirtng is not.

I used some 4x2 planks on the outside with breeze blocks on the run skirt to hold them in place and secure the run (its on slabs)

I've just got some kickboards that are about 4" high, held in place with bricks.

OOOH THANK YOU SO MUCH some great replies. I've shared all with hubby but bless he still insists No, he's going to have a go at making one to suit our run!! (the velcro) ties were fine he said , so i'll work ot a pattern then make it up he says!!!!

Well, i'll just have to respect his enthusiasm & patience & actually i trust his wonderful skills. .bless . .hmmm so watch this space . .. but actually i did like the idea of the log roll or painting th skirting boards or gravel boards & painting them to atch the cube, although i did then think i could really paint them decorate them with chickens & things Hmmmm but that was quickly dismissed as a reason for purchasing boards, as dear hubby would use matching green whatever material he is going to use . .vinyl, tarpaulin ?????? Guess i'll wait & see then!!
