Lets hope no one relies on this forum for treating strokes. It is a chicken forum afterall.

ahh - sorry, I thought that's precisely what Lesley's question was - how would you recognise one so that prompt action could be taken...

Phil

recognition yes, treatment no.

in that case - you've lost me.. "Ooops, word censored!"ody on here has offered advice on treating strokes have they?

Hey guys - this is supposed to be a thread about Monty Don!

None of us claim to be medical experts, but I'm glad to read the acronym above - it helps to have things like that at the back of your mind, in case you come across someone who may have had a stroke. It must be the case that the sooner treatment starts, the better.

Could we get back on topic? I'm really sad to hear this, I noticed that he hasn't been doing Gardener's World for a few weeks, but I'm sure I saw a programme where he sort of signed off and said he would not be at Berryfields for the next few weeks - presumably that was already planned before this happened. I do hope this isn't too serious, and that he'll be back, I enjoy watching GW with him on.

If we turn up mob handed he might take a turn for the worse.

Just a few of us eh? No more than a dozen or so.

is that a dozen in total or a dozen at a time :):)

Clare..........I'm just about to bake the meringues for Sunday - I'll make a few extra :D :D :D

I have to say GW without Monty isn't as good :(:( Will miss him greatly on a Friday evening - or in my case Sunday morning as that's when I normally get round to watching GW :D:D

I thought when I heard this that his Black dog(depression) was back!

I am gutted that he's had a stroke, when he started on Gardeners world I didn't like him (no-one can live up to Geoff) but I warmed to him especially when he did the programme with offenders and he came across as a really genuine guy. I hope he gets well soon :!:

 I've just found this thread and that is so sad. I've just finished reading his autobiography. I have always had the impression, and even more since reading his book, that you couldn't wish to meet a nicer person. He always has such a calming feeling about him. Given the problems he has come through, I think the news is even more sad. 52 is simply too young. Fingers crossed that he makes a full recovery. I think it will be horrendous for him if he doesn't make a full recovery as his whole life revolves around gardening - particularly as it is the only thing that helps him through the most horrendous depression.

I'll be there with you Clare, taking him his cake - I might also treat him to a new pair of crocs, seeing as he is such a fan

I am in  Poor Monty! :(

He is my absolute favourite gardening presenter. I know he said he was taking 6 weeks off GW but would be back for GWLive at the NEC, Birmingham. Presumably this was before he had a stroke. I do hope he makes a speedy and full recovery. Get well soon, Monty!

As a nurse, formerly working in the field of neuro-rehab, I just wanted clarify some of the information on here. If an ischemic stroke (blockage rather than haemorrhage) is treated with clot-busting medication very early on, then there is a good chance of making a fair recovery. It's not a miraculous cure and if permanent damage (as in death of brain tissue) has already occured, that cannot be reversed, but by increasing the blood supply to the affected area, further damage can be avoided. Does that make sense?
