My new hen :) ..... with pics!

Recommended Posts

Just been round again, they're lovely people, hadn't spoken to them in ages, but they've got a bowl of water and food out for her :) I don't think they want her in there much longer though as she's been digging up their sweet peas :roll:

They're having a BBQ at the moment, so we reckon she's in the ditch behind their hedge - she wouldn't want to be in the garden with lots of people I doubt. Just going to have to wait until tomorrow. At least she is familiarising that place with food, so she should in theory keep going back there.

The saga continues!

Apparently she didn't go back to her little spot on the hedge last night and hasn't been in for food today :( we had a good look around the garden today to see if we could here any rustling...but there was none.

They said they'd ring us as soon as they catch sight!

It's like an episode of Corrie!

Well look who we found...!!!

She doesn't look best pleased in this picture!

Finally caught her with the help of 5 people and a net!

She ran into a bush, and came out the other end perched on a window sill right next to my dad, who grabbed her, and then I took her off my dad.

Have clipped her wings as soon as we got her in, which was a bit of a daunting task having to follow a diagram out of a book, but I managed it :D and she was nice and calm about it. I gave her a bit of corn as well which she happily ate out of my hand. She loves being tickled under her chin as well!

At the moment she's in a large box where it's nice and dark, I thought she would need a bit of 'alone' time after the traumatic capture!

We have made the eglu run up in the big run so I am going to lift her out of the eglu each morning into that run.

But, what is the best way of introducing the hens tonight? I thought of putting her in the eglu when it's really dark (about half 10/11) and shutting them both in together. When they were introduced a few days ago Meringue wasn't bad with her so I hope that will be ok.

Has anyone else got any other ideas ??

So glad you've got her back! As for introductions, I'd pop them all in together overnight and see how they get on when let out in the morning. If she is being bullied too much, let the others out, but keep her in the run. Do this every day, keeping them in together for longer periods of time. Once she's had at least 5 days in the run (to imprint 'home' on her  ) you should be able to let them all out together. You might find you don't need all this as they have been together before, but just in case! Hope it goes well 8)

I've just put her to bed. There was a little bokking from Meringue but they soon quietened down :) I was sat outside the eglu for ages listening to see if everything was ok!

For tomorrow i've set up the other eglu run in the big run, and i'll lift her into bed for a couple of nites so she knows where home is! But i'll keep Meringue in the run so Oreo doesn't get lonely, and theres a lot of space so she won't feel intimidated I doubt.

How long do you think I should confine her into the eglu run, before letting her out into the big run?

That's what I though, just better checking 8)

I had a look through the articles before, really handy. Luckily i'm only introducing her to 1 and not a flock of 20 so hopefully it should be easier :? And Meringue is a bit dosy these days and doesn't have much of a beak left (beak clipped when we got her and also keeps chipping it!) so shouldn't do much damage if anything breaks out. They seemed pretty content the other day when they were together as well so fingers crossed.

I'm going to let Oreo settle down and when she has i'll introduce another bantam, and then my little flock will be complete :)
