Baggins
I have spent much of the day driving to collect my ex-batts, and thinking about the dreadful injustice of their lives to date. How is it possible that we can do this to them in the 21st century? Call ourselves human(e). I re-homed two girls (Tiki and Koru) from the West Sussex rescue, brilliantly organised by Sarah from the BHWT. Once again, upsetting on arrival but also heartwarming to see so many girls enjoying their first taste of fresh air, freedom and sunshine. I drove as fast as possible to get home (very guilty feeling about cramming them back into a box to transport them, having just escaped from something similar). On arrival, they merely stood stock still, blinking. Within minutes, Tiki was pecking the grass .... and now, only 40 mins in, they have found the layers mash in the glug. I am absolutely thrilled but still well up when I see them (relief that they have a great home; extreme sadness at their sorry state). I love them already! Congratulations BHWT - outstanding work! P.S. Pepper and Matilda are NOT impressed!

Tweety
Well done, re-homing your two lucky girls. I have just put my name down for 4 ex-batts and must admit to some trepidation about the state they will be in and know that I will be upset when I see them all. Like you, I cannot believe that we can treat other creatures so badly and it is heartening to know that there are so many people wanting to re-home these poor little girls. Rhapsody
I was there today too and got my 4 new girls. I had to bite hard on my lip a couple of times I felt so bad for them. I ended up coming back with the most naked one of the lot, couldnt leave her behind
Abbey Road Girl
Thanks so much for sharing, Baggins. Very moving and inspirational. I got hybrids because there was such a long waiting list for ex-bats, but in due course any new hens will be ex-bats. (I can see that one more chicken related expense is going to be a proper camera--there's no way I can take pics as great as yours with my mobile! ) You done good on all counts!
