foreveryoung
hehe! we back onto my sons school (he's 6) well at the beginning of this week I got asked if the class (around 30 of them) could come and see the girls and the ducks.............. their doing this as part of their ICP learning and have chosen to film a documentary called "what came 1st the chicken or the egg?) well it was supposed to be today (this afternoon between 1 and 3) well that got rearranged to this comming Friday. well it should be interesting, it will be groups of 6, as to not scare the birds) Edited June 18, 2008 by Guest

Cate in NZ
I think it's a great thing to do Emma . I hope it goes well for you and that the children behave.....the chickens will behave impeccably I'm sure
AnnieR
Yes, you are totally mad, but I strongly suspect that of most of us on here! I run a small pre-school, and weve just incubated, hatched and raised several chicks....the kids were absolutly fascinated, and learned soooo much from the experience. (the parents and staff were really interested too) When the chicks are fully grown I will take them back in to them (My friend has them in her humongous garden) or even take in one of my own girls. I often take in my rabbit, or one of the dogs, as so many children do not have any animal experiences at all . Have your visitors been and gone yet, and did your garden and girls survive the experience? Hope it went well.
owenofj
Jade (our 9 year old) told all her friends at school we got some chickens, and none of them believed her (she does have a tendency to talk out of her vent) so we took some pictures of her with the chickens... there was a queue of kids, teachers and parents all wanting to have a look on Monday morning, took ages to escape. Bless my little monster mouth You can guarantee that every single one of those kids will be talking about the chickens to their parents for days after, much more exciting than boring old maths and spellings. Good on you for doing it
Jane 20
We have had various visits from friends nieces, nephews and grandchildren who lovevto come along and see the girls and 'find' eggs in the nest but usually two or three at a time, not 30! Good luck
ChrisP
30 kids?! Blimey, Good Luck! You could just say that if they are too noisey, the hens will run away and hide - this worked when neighbours grandkids came round
Helly Welly
I have to say, i'd love it if DD's school took that much interest. It's a great school but they don't seem to show much willingness to do things that aren't in "the plan". Whenever DD has friends round, i save collecting the eggs so they can do it. Then they get to take them home.
Ain't Nobody Here
Wow, you're brave . I'm sure they'll all be so fascinated they'll behave really well . (Don't let them walk through your house, I bet every one of them will get chicken poop on their shoes .)
Willow
Hi Emma I'd be interested in knowing how it went. We live opposite the infant school and whilst I don't have any children there any more I had wodnered about asking whether they wanted to bring the children over to see the chickens. Actually thinking about it since my eldest school breaks up before the infants & juniors maybe I should suggest it for then as he loves talking about chickens
AJuff
What a lovely thing to offer to do. I only live7 minutes walk from school and I know my reception class would love to meet my hens!!!!!! I think you're braver than me!!!
foreveryoung
Jakes teacher came round to do a "risk assesment" something they have to do regardless what what they are doing! she seemd quiet amazed at what I actually had lol, she told me that they had all the kids peering through the fence to see if they could see the girls! I thought it was rarther funny to say the least!! they are going to come in groups of 6 so thats not gonna be a problem, I also handed her an egg that was not long been laid and was still warm...... I am going to leave the egg collection for the kids (then put them back for the next group lol! should be interesting lol apparently one of the teachers have just brought an eglu, would be interesting to know who that was, I wonder if they would be on here!?!? Seagazer
Good luck with this, very brave but nice. We're going to blow one of our eggs, take some photos of YS holding the chickens etc and YS is taking it into school. Apparently everyone including the teachers keep asking him about them
Mutrix Farmers
Hope today went well. You do realise at least half the class will now go home and ask M & D to buy chickens and ducks I think it's great when children take an interest in food producing animals, there are surely some out there that think eggs are made in a factory!! Phosphorus
Oh best of luck. My dd wants me to take one of our girls into her Reception class. I think I will try to do it if the teacher is willing, but given the reaction (lots of clucking and immitating wings) by her friends when we had to take a chook to the vet via the school it will be interesting Hope it all goes okay. Geoid
By the way, The EGG came first Are you sure it wasnt the chicken who laid the egg in the 1st place!!!! Ahh, A chicken DIDNT lay the egg, one of the chickens ancestors did, but they are not called chickens, as chickens mutated from them. Theory of evolution and all that...
