Shelley Cockell
Woke this morning with an uneasy feeling. Ethel is usually strutting her stuff across the lawn at dawn and it was 5am, I couldn't hear a thing. Hubby sleepily said, I think I heard a fox in the distance last night (we live in a rural village). Didn't you think to get up and lock up the samll run?? - I said. Anyway had a glancing look out the window - no Ethel, Looked out the other window at the run, no chickens? Hubby then obviously got my uneasy feeling and ventured downstairs. I heard him shuffling around and then come back into the house to get a plastic bag! Oh dear - Ethel was dead and headless on the lawn, feather everywhere. It must have woken us as Hubby said she was still very warm. I looked out the window again to see the feathers and saw the culprit in the distance (almost like it was winking at me) - it ran away - and then I heard the farmers gun - revenge Other girls are all ok and were all still in there house so not aware - they do not venture out of the run as they cannot get over the fence - Ethel always was a flighty girl - I will miss her. Shelley Cockell
Thanks for all your messages. My sons were both a little upset this morning until they realised that it was Daddy's chicken and not theirs! I like to see that they can always see the positive side of things! Edward was pleading me to let him see the body - he is only 5! Needless to say I said no. Joe and I spent the morning picking up the feathers - he was very sweet and went and gave Hubby a cuddle when I told him (he is nearly 3) I think it is a good lesson for them to learn about predators and that sometimes things do come to an end - do you think I was wrong to tell him what had happened? I was quite blatant about it

cluckbok
No I don't think you were wrong to tell them. They have to learn that things don't last forever!, if only they did eh! I wouldn't have shown them the dead chook either. They can remember her the way she was. Poor dad lost his chook, perhaps you ought to get him a new girl later. Poor Ethel RIP.
