Greetings and talk me into buying the green Eglu!

Recommended Posts

Greetings from Ohio in the USA. I have had my index finger on the Checkout button three times... My wife and I are going to buy 2 or probably 3 hens for our fenced in courtyard garden. When I first started trying to decide what coop to build or buy I really liked the innovation of the Eglu. After spending a bit of time on some American chicken forums I started to notice many people bashing them. I have been visiting your forum and have noticed NO complaints from the hundred of Eglu owners (other then the poor quality of the run shades). I really like the looks of the Forsham Arks and could probably build one. I just have neighbors to think about and think the low profile of the Eglu would be more appealing in our setting. What advantages do you find in an Eglu over a tradtional ark? I have not been able to bring myself to spend the money YET! I am very much interested in hearing any negatives about the Eglu. And even hoping you would be kind enough to encourage myself and wife to purchase one. Thank you for sharing your comments and suggestions!

Hello and welcome!! I recieved my Orange Eglu last week here in MA I haven't yet recieved my girls, but I can tell you with the heavy rain we had this past week here, the eglu didn't leak and the low profile fits in perfectly in my yard. I say, "Order the green eglu, you won't regret it." :D

Hello Mark and welcome to the forum!

The main advantage to the eglu is cleaning - it takes mintes!! :D:D

Forsham arks are lovely, but I personally wouldn't want to be scrubbing the wood, waiting for it to dry etc before the chickens can go back in. Plus there is the annual maintenance of using wood preservative every year

Order the eglu, you won't regret it :D:D

Welcome to the forum ... I think we've all done that 'finger tap-dance' before ordering - shall I, shan't I. Go ahead, you won't regret it!

Eglus are funky, and as you say they can fit in well into a garden setting - I love the coloured ones, but a green one will blend in very well.

They are so easy to clean, 15 minutes with a hosepipe and a scrubbing brush, and that's not just cleaning, that's dismantling and reassembling. There's nowhere for lice or mites to hide, and in an urban garden setting, it's reassuring to know that there's nothing to smell!

And over here, they have a very good resale value on eBay, I am guessing that would be the same where you are, so if you do change your mind you can recover most of your outlay. You won't change your mind, though!

I have had two Eglus, and now a Cube, and I have nothing negative to say about them - admittedly I have never had a wooden ark, so I can't make a comparison, but the Eglu is a winner for me.

A lady visited my cube the other day. She already has chickens in a wooden ark. She has had to line the wood with sheets of polythene so that it can be washed down easily. My cube takes just under an hour to scrub it spotless and reassemble ready for use. The eglu is even quicker! :D

You are far less likely to be plagued with redmite if the hens are in an Eglu, particularly now that plastic roosting bars are available.

Takes moments to clean and holds it value well....at least on this side of the pond.

Press that button! :D

Welcome to the forum.

Hi Mark

I absolutely love my cube, so do my girls!

Its easy to clean and looks good in the garden. The door to the run could be bigger but (touch wood) I have never had to climb through it :D

I had an eglu to start with and I was really please with it. Once again easy to clean and looks really stylish in the garden. The girls liked this one too!

I sold the eglu to my daughters boss who is also pleased with it as I wanted more chickens. They are so addictive :D

I'd say GO for it you'll love keeping hens :D

Best Wishes

Go for it,

I've not long got mine too, and spent a few months thinking shall I - shan't I, and I am sooooo glad I did,

My girls are great, and are a real pleasure to have.

The eglu is easy to clean, good for the chooks (mites etc) and easy on the eye. Here is a piccy of my set up,

hope this helps,

Annie.

Hi Mark,

Go for it!! I have an Eglu, having never even held a chicken before and it's great. As others say, so very easy to clean and absolutely no maintenance at all beyond swilling out. No nasty bugs and mites plus cool in summer, warm in winter. I have a friend in NC who has chickens in a wooden coop and due to the differences in temperatures there, she has fans in there is summer and heaters in winter!! Plus after 6 years, it's falling apart!

I have recently upgraded to a Cube as I've caught the chicken loving bug.

Eglus are a fantastic invention. :D

Yes,they're expensive compared to timber alternatives, but cleaning is dead easy,no places for parasites to live and they look so damn good in your garden in glorious orange!

Go on-you wont regret it! :D

You won't regret it.

We have people in England who bash the Eglu too, but when you listem to their complaints it becomes lear they;ve never actuallyh seen an Eglu in the flesh.

The biggest selling points have to be (a) you're so much less likely to get red mite, especially now the roosting bars are plastuc. It's a serious problem in wooden housing, and sometimes the only solution for them is to blow-torch the inside; and (b) they really are sooooo easy to clean.

There is a video on YouTube of a guy in the US showing how easy it is to dismantle and clean.

Hi Mark, and welcome...

I'm a newbie-owner-to-be (Cube arriving in 6 days!) -- and I too have been on other chicken forums where great delight is taken in bashing the eglu from all angles. To be very blunt: they are taking nonsense.

  • The first big bash is that it is "too hot", while wood can breathe -- it's not.

The next is that it is made of plastic and wood is more environmentally friedly -- makes no sense, if wood has to be chemically treated each year and the eglu & cube are made from 100% recyclable materials.

And there is the babble about it costing too much -- again, for a hen house you will never need to replace (at least not because of wear and tear) every couple of years and treat with chemicals and spend hours and money on maintaining... plus most comparable hen houses cost the same here in the UK, if not more. No, my money, for the long run, is better served with a hen house designed for my life.

The final one I cannot argue with, though -- there are few things prettier or more rustically charming than a wooden house painted in your own design to reflect your own style. But that was not enough to sway me, not once I saw the new lilac coloured cube... I was hooked on its unique charm and pressed that button!

Like you I had my finger on the button a few times before making my mind up to buy an eglu. I chose green to blend in with the garden rather than make a statement. I have no regrets. It's so easy to keep clean.

Perhaps my only regret is that I didn't buy a cube first as they hold 10 hens!! Chickens are addictive and you'll want more and more . . . . . However I do love the shape of the eglu.

I decided that I'd give it six months and if I wasn't enjoying it I'd sell hens and eglu on . . . . I laugh as I'm now considering another eglu but can't decide on the colour.

Go for it!!! And post the pictures!!!!

I just pushed the button! My stomach hurts at spending the money, but I am very excited. My wife said enough already, just buy the damn thing (she actually started this whole idea). I also just contacted a local farmer and ordered 1 Buff Orpington, and 2 Gold Laced Wyandottes. The chicks are currently just over a month old and are being held until my beautiful green Eglu arrives! Thank you all for your advice and I will post photos as soon as we are up and running!

WEL DONE! Mark

You wont regret it and you will wonder why you waited so long :D

Once your girls arrive you will be besotted with them. They make getting out of bed early to let them out worth while :D

So jealous you are getting a buff orpington. I love those, they are so beautiful and placid.

Look forward to hearing how you are getting on with them and there will always be lots of advise on the forum.

Best Wishes

A good decision! You'll soon forget about the money when you're enjoying the company of your beautiful new girls (and their lovely eggs). The pleasure you're going to get from keeping chickens will long outlive the temporary pain of the debit from your bank account.

Congratulations.

Congrats, Mark, on such quick delivery!

As a transplanted Yank, coming up on her first decade living in the UK, I concur that British chicken-keepers, particularly those here at the Omlet forum, are a fabulously helpful, kind and knowledgable lot.

Now, Friday night outside a pub.... hmmm.... I don't fancy my chances  -- but keep coming back here to the forum; tons of support and know-how.
