Breeder found, chickens landed

Recommended Posts

Went to Storrs Poultry in Oxbridge, just outside Sheffield and picked up our ladies yesterday. I was impressed by how healthy they all looked and that they all are fully vaccinated.

We ended up getting a White Star, a Black Rock, a Bluebelle and a Warren. We haven't named them yet as this kind of serious decision cannot be rushed into.

They were calmness personified on the 50 minute journey home and settled straight into their new habitat. Ruby our Weimeramer pup was more interested in the Marmite on toast that we had given them than the chickens themselves and Archie our cat made a stalking motion towards the chickens until he noticed that they were a bit bigger than the sparrows that he is used to and made a quick exit.

We spent most of the evening observing them to make sure that they all new how to use the glug and grubs (no probs there) and then watched each of them take themselves to bed.

We were in the garden at 7am this morning and couldn't believe that we were up before them, as the sun was shining brightly and we had read on this forum that that was their signal to get up. Anyway, Maria opened their door and one by one they all sauntered out and went to breakfast.

Have we just been lucky or are all chickens as easy going as this? :P

Hi Chuck! and congratulations on getting your girls! :D

My girls dont get up until 7.00am and I do count myself lucky but if I dont arrive until 7.01am they start sqwarking

I always make sure Im there by 6.59am

Your young ladies sound very calm and serene and I bet you have to keep watching them because they are so facinating.

Just wait until you get your first lovely warm egg (gets my heart strings every time)

Will Maria be having the first egg? as she has just had her birthday

As they are Maria's girls (I have to keep reminding myself) I think that it is only right that she gets the first egg when it arrives.

Congratulations! You have chosen similar to my girls.. I have the same (touch wood!) easy routine so far!

Mine amake no noise at all until they hear me opening the door.. in the week between 7-7.45 and weekends between 8.00 - 8.45! :D

They take themselves off to bed at 9.30 on the dot!

Think I have just been lucky so far and maybe things will change as time goes on :?

Best of luck with your girls¬

oh my goodness they are all gorgeous.. I love them.. I have a sheak for the bluebelle but you'll have to forgive me this.. I have bluebelle envy

Your doggie is gorgeous!!!

Thank loopyloo

Ruby the dog is getting to be a right character and seems to have taken to the chickens straight away. Archie the cat likes nothing better than to cuddle up to you and to play fetch! He even comes running to greet us when we pull up in the car. I think he thinks he's a dog.

Congratulations Chuck Norris. :D

Where are you based?

If you'd rather not say that's fine.

I've been to Storrs Poultry a couple of times.

No problems Eglutine, I'm based in Clayton near Bradford.

The lady at Storrs was very friendly and helpful. I wasn't expecting to go off-roading for a mile or so to get to the farm though.

I was originally planning to go to Edward W Boothmans, as it is nearer. Although I called there 2 mins late (the place closes at 4pm) I was greeted by a very rude woman who told me to come back when they are open.

I'd sooner go the extra distance (about 20 miles) for a freindly smile. :D
