Natural/herbal remedy

Recommended Posts

Well I dont know if any of you can help with this but I thought I would ask. I have a Benign Essential Tremor in my hands mainly which can be reduced greatly with Beta Blockers however this affects my blood pressure too greatly and makes me feel ill, so I cannot take them.

I am very self concious of the shaking, and it gets worse if someone mentions to me "ooh your shaking are you cold??" or something similar.. I dont want to take any 'drugs' for this however I did wonder if there was anything more natural that I could try.

I would really appreciate your help, as it's very upsetting at times and I get so self concious I dont want to buy anything in shops etc for fear of shaking when I hand over/take the money etc. :?

Thanks for reading.

to be honest it's taken all my guts to post it on here, I am not sure I have enough guts to talk it through with anyone else face to face.

I was in tears about it at my doctors but they can only treat it with drugs and I dont want that for the rest of my life I am 35!

that web site says...

Alcohol is known to inhibit the tremor but physicians are reluctant to recommend this form of treatment

what do doctors know! ;)

Homeopathy could be really helpful as they treat anything totally holistically ie. they don't just say 'ok, tremor - you need this remedy' but they talk to you about loads of things and then work out the best remedy for *you* personally.

Aromatherapy or yoga could also be really helpful if it's worsened by stress or nerves. Maybe find a good therapeutic yoga teacher to try? Or an aromatherapist who might give you regular massages and a particular mixture for you to massage your own hands with/bath in?

Go on see a homeopath - we don't bite

Seriously - homeopathy can do wonders and we are used to people talking to us - that is an essential part of what we do. Everything you say is treated in the strictest of confidence, the sole purpose of which is to find a remedy that fits your overall picture. If there hasn't been too much pathological cell change in the body, then homeopathy can sort out the problem, otherwise it can palliate.

Now if only I practiced in Cambridge......

thanks ANH  I will try to get some info this afternoon when I finish work. Upsetting is the right word, you know that feeling in your stomach when you hear bad news? well that's how I feel everytime someones mentions that I am shaking.. :( or I knbow I am shaking too much to take money out of my purse etc etc and people will notice.

One person asked me once if I was scared of her (I used to work with her) yeah right that'd be the day.

It's getting worse as I get older I think and to be honest my typing on here is suffering aswell. (which is only a side point, but just so you all know if I type garbled that's probably why) although I do try to proof read when I get chance. A spell checker would be handy. :?

I have taken Beta Blockers but to be honest they lower my blood pressure and make me feel terrible. So although they worked for a while in reducing it, they were not a long term solution for me.

Some good advice above Lynsey - and it's good that you've come to talk to us, perhaps it will help you to reach a position where you can face strangers without worrying about what they will think.

I hope you can mange to reach that stage because you obviously still have everything else working well (I hope?) and worrying about what people think will spoil the quality of life that you could have.

Life is too short to be worrying about what others think - if you can reach the stage of laughingly asking for help with your chnage when out shopping and giving a short explanation, if you feel it is necessary, you will be able to live your life as fully as you can :)

thanks Lesley, I know it is really good advice. :)

I do tell strangers why I am shaking, and I dont hide myself away, far from it, I work all week, and am always involved with both my sons cricket and football teams.

But It still upsets me (although I smile and say it doesn't matter when people ask me) I know I should count myself lucky as this is minor compared to some things people are going through, but I still find it upsetting and it gets me down at times.

I was so glad that chip and pin came in and I didn't have to sign my signature as I dont know how my bank ever allowed all those different squiggles through.... :?

I know how you feel in that respect, my knee still doesn't work properly - minor compared to what some people have to live with. I worked hard to be able to walk without a stick but feel very vulnerable when in public. Because it looks normal ('ish! ) no-one else knows that I have to walk carefully - and couldn't run across the road if a car was speeding up etc. I'm scared of falling in the middle of the road........ and so I avoid going to places on my own :? It gets me down as well :?

I totally appreciate what your saying and can realate totally. :)

One thing that has upset me the most was when I was asked if I was having withdrawals from alchohol.. :? I guess that's what it must look like, but as I dont drink (well a glass of wine about once in a blue moon) it's a little off putting to reaslise that's what some must think.

I guess that's their own problem for assuming without knowing the facts, but comments like those from someones leave their mouth and are forgotten by them... it's never forgotten by me. :?

My children are fine with it and if their friends ask why I shake, they say because she's got a tremor in her hands, or if they are feeling very protective "because she does!!"

some days it's really ok and very mild, others it's terrible. so I guess the thing would be to find out why it's worse on some days than others. :?

sorry I guess I have opened up my heart a bit here, so I do apologise.

Good for your children - learning how to say 'it's none of your business' without doing so rudely is a great and important skill I feel! My DD1 was asked the other day about her favourite school teacher. She said 'I don't go to school' and was then asked why. I thought she'd feel the need to really explain herself and say she was home educated, but she didn't - she just said 'because I don't want to' which is totally and utterly true and a fantastic 'it's none of your business' response

Hope you find the help you need and, if you don't find a way of helping the tremors, at least I hope you find the support and strength you need to feel more positive about it ((((hugs))))

I also have quite shaky hands which for my work is a big problem so when people say they can't manage a technique at work I point out if I can do it anyone can

Mine are getting worse as well as I get older but nowhere near the stage of medication for control I find I am worse if I think about it if I am being watched etc I seem to be worse :?

I hope you find a solution but please don't be embarrased shaky hands are not an embarrasing problem really

I was also going to suggest Lager as there was a well known Snooker player (Hurricane Higgins) who used Lager to stop his hands shaking when he played  Very similar effect to Beta Blockers

See! The forum got you laughing about it! :D

I am 53 and have disgusting ganglions on both wrists that are both ugly and affect my ability to grip. They interefere with my everyday life as I can't guarantee I won't drop things and I have trouble with stiff door handles etc. It gets me down at times, as it makes me feel old before my time. But at other times I just say "What the heck" and go for it anyway.

You can always rely on the folks here to be supportive and come up with brilliant suggestions, no matter what. There has to be a suitable non-pharmaceutical treatment out there for your condition.

It's wonderful that your children are so supportive of you. Good for them. Good luck!

I built the website www.essentialtremorinfo.com to highlight the condition. I also have E.T with my worst affected part being my head (which is extremely embarrassing!!) Like yourself I was ridiculed and asked if I was nervous but I now take Beta Blockers which work very well for me.

I am waiting for an article from one of the members on the site regarding Vitamin B12. He inadvertantly came came across lack of Vitamin B12 causing tremor so visited his doctor to ask for a blood test to see if he was deficient in this vitamin. His doctor was sceptical but the blood test did indeed come back positive for deficiency. He is now taking Vitamin B12 and his tremors have decreased, he does still have a tremor but not so noticible.

I wouldn't recommend just rushing out and dosing up but a visit to your doc for a blood test won't do any harm.

Believe me, I know the embarrassment you feel when out in public. I have run out of pills a few times and my tremor is extremely bad when this happens - it even affects my voice now.

Alcohol does stop the tremor which is what your doc was hinting at but it's not really a solution as you can't drink before work etc. plus I get many sad emails from folk who have become alcoholics through controlling their tremor this way.

Feel free to email me if you want to have a moan or anything

Catherine

I had a ganglion on my left wrist, had it for years and hated it :( My mum used to be a nurse very much of the 'old school' she said the remedy for ganglions was to bash them with a bible  So I said 'go ahead' and she did and it disappeared for ever  Bit wacky I know, but it worked for me :D
