I think we're unanimous on here - give him the drops so he can enjoy a pain-free life. You say you're actively shortening his life, but the truth is none of us knows how long we - or our pets - have got.

It's perhaps a bit unhelpful for the vet to say she wouldn't recommend this if he were a younger cat, because he's NOT younger - he's 15, which is a pretty good age to get to. While it's worth pursuing homeopathy etc, you'll make the right decision because you know what he is like and will be able to tell if he's in pain or not.

Sorry that you find yourself in this situation - it's heartbreaking when our furry friends start to get older, but a privilege to be able to do what we can for them.

Hi Pam,

We are getting on fine thanks, chooks have settled in and almost ignore the 3 labs now, although Snowdrop has told them all off for poking their noses too close to the wire! I think that as she's lowest in the pecking order in the run, she sees the hairy ones as lower than her, so fair game! Jess is showing distinct signs of OCD with regards the chooks - mad dog sits & watched Buttercup when she's laying in the nestbox, and sits at the back of the Eglu when they've gone to bed, watching the darkness inside for signs of movement! Hysterical to watch!

Having just downloaded some pics on photobucket, here's a piccy of the 3 of them, not great as they aren't posing, but gives you an idea

Have turned into a total chicken bore if there is such a thing - not on here I hear you cry!:dance:

Life is soooo hectic at the mo isn't it, what with end of term rushing like a juggernaut without brakes towards us! Can't wait for the lack of school runs though! I know the girls (dogs) & chooks will still have me up early, but at least I'll be able to go back to bed if I want to - lazy mare aren't I?!

Take care, if you fancy a cuppa & a chat, give me a shout. Chooks are getting better at being picked up & hairy girls are always up for a cuddle!

p.s. Have used your egg box almost everyday since the chooks arrived as Buttercup is laying, haven't managed to fill it though, max we've managed is 3 as they keep being eaten!!! x

We had a similar dilema with our old cat Toffee. She was in pain in her hip joints and had trouble getting onto chairs and beds and getting upstairs. She had the anti-inflammatory drops for a couple of years before her death. She was at least 19 when she died we had her for 17 years and she was an adult cat of about 2 years old when we got her.

She died of a tumor in her stomach in the end but her kidneys although failing were not bad for her age despite being told that they were failing when she started on the drops.

The drops made her so much more comfortable she could bunny hop down the stairs after she started on them and her jumping became easier. It was great to see her moving more freely and obviously much happier. She was chasing her tail in the garden one sunnny day last June about a month before she left us and it was a joy to see.

 It has brought a tear to my eye remembering my old friend who left us a year ago this week. R.I.P Toffee. :(

Good luck with Jack and I hope he goes on to live out a comfortable autumn of his years.

Well we're back - Jack was a good boy and the Vet managed to get a urine sample from him - needle into his bladder  - they had tried earlier this week but his bladder wasn't full enough.

Jo the Vet has just phoned to say that the results from this are better than expected :D:D Although there are some traces of proteins and concentration is not quite what it should be, they are not as bad as she was expecting :D :D

I have got some Metacam anti-flam for him and will add this to a special food treat just for him each day :D :D

He's got to go back next week when his current 14 day antibiotic injection wears off, to get another shot as he's also fighting a kidney infection :(

Poor chap he hates the sight of the pet carrier now and adopts the 'legs splayed out so you can't get me into the carrier' pose :roll:

I know I've made the right decision for him :D - I had to make a similar decision about my own health last year and decided to delay my pain medication for as long as possible because once I start that's it for life

Jack Cat sends big meows and purrs and he's just off for a snooze on the nice clean duvet :roll::lol:

Wee tip Pam always put him into the carrier backwards

I hope he starts feeling better soon

ask the vet to show you how to inject his antib's yourself then all you have to do is go and get the injection without putting him through the stress of a visit for routine treatments :?

tried that :D - just got left with the bitey, clawy, disgruntled end still out of the carrier trying to kill me as I pushed him into the carrier :lol:

 This is so familiar.

My top tip is to keep the carrier covered with a blanket or towel until the last minute. As soon as Welly sees it, he heads for the most inaccessible place he can find.

I'm always amazed that the huge brave and strong cat that went into the basket at home, has turned into a meek, quiet, flattened-out sort of cat that clings to the blanket, when it's opened again at the vet's!

Glad to hear that Jack's results were a bit better than expected.

Hi Pam,

Glad Jack's results are better, and sorry I got you into "trouble".

Will try not to go off topic again Fred, can't promise anything though!:wink:

A forum post isn't a real post until it's gone off topic a couple of time :lol::lol:

Back when the Forum first started, the Boys at Omlet used to be Mods and it's funny when you read these early posts with James reminding everyone to stay 'on topic' - he soon realised he was fighting a losing battle
