New to chickens and eglus so possibly asking some daft questions but here goes...

How often do you clean out you eglu? As in remove and clean the droppings tray? And how often do you wash, scrub and disinfect it?

What do you put in the droppings tray as litter if anything at all? On the omlet website video it shows nothing and the droppings being chucked in a hedge!

Please advise.

Hi :D

I empty droppings tray every other day, empty nest box , replace nesting material and scrub trays and roosting bars every weekend and take whole thing apart and jet wash every 4 weeks.

I use newspaper to line the trays but you don't have to use anything, I just think its easier to empty!

Shredded paper in nextbox and a sprinkling of daitom or mite powder in both nest box and trays.

Also poo pick run daily..

To be honest its up to you how often works for you.. and how much poo you get

Hope this helps!

Edtied to add, forgot to put I use Ecover wasing up liquid to scrub cube, trays etc..

I take apart and wash/clean it every week-2 weeks with Ecover and some lavendar/tea tree drops for good measure and smell.

The droppings tray I do about every 3 days (as I only have two girls)

Nestbox gets done every day with water, food, treat and grit bowls where needed. (as my two girls like to sleep in the nestbox and I cant bear to turf them out)

The run gets poop picked up every day and when I see them, other than that it gets totally cleaned/raked through and bedding removed etc etc when the eglu is done every 1-2 weeks.

I love doing it to be honest, I love seeing it all new and clean.:lol:

As I have four chickens my eglu gets grubby quite quickly. I remove the droppings from the droppings tray and nesting box every morning and also s"Ooops, word censored!"e the bars.

I clean it completely out every week and have a scrub down of the perches, droppings tray and nestbox, removing the lid and letting in some light to kill off any bugs there maybe.

I've been giving mine a full clean out weekly, jet washing it etc. I now line the tray with newspaper which makes it much easier to empty, which I empty twice a week, the paper and dropping go into the compost bin (although my dad's now asking can he nick a few days worth for his compost bin). If your local authority provides the green waste recycling bins it should also be possible to put the droppings and paper into this bin.

Once a week put clean roosting bars in, new shredded paper in nestbox and one sheet of newspaper plus shredded paper in poopdeck. If weather permits, take eglu apart and clean.

Once every 5-6 weeks, move run, remove top layer, dig over, add Stalosan F & garden lime, new hemcore.

I feel a bit guilty admitting I only empty the poopdeck once a week  . It doesn't smell and there are no flies so it works for me :? . (I do s"Ooops, word censored!"e poos off the bars daily so I'm not completely manky!)

When you say a 'complete dissmantel' how far do you go?!!

:( I wasn't there when my cube was assembled my Omlet so I don't know how to take it apart, apart from the following:

Slide the roof back slightly to see in and remove the back wall, when people do a jet wash clean how much do they dismantel?! :?

Dot he side walls and the front wall (with door) come off then?

we take the roof and the back off, take out the roosting bars and round nesting box portion. Wheel out cube from walk in run and power wash everything.

You know, I asked Steve, the man who put my cube together, about this. Saying that people on the forum take their cubes apart to clean. He was shocked to hear that, and said it wasn't necessary - just to wipe down inside and remove the readily removable bits for a hose down.

Have cube owners found that is is absolutely necessary to take totally dismantle it then? Is that for ease of cleaning? or do you think it is necessary to keep on top of mite infestation, etc.?

our reason is purley because we have our cube in our run (see below pic), we do have double doors on the run but we find it easier to take it to pieces and take it out of the run. our garden isnt huge :( and the area to clean the cube in is small, if we had a huge garden will plenty of room to manouvre im quite sure we would just power wash the whole lot in situ! :D

how do you poo pick the run?

do you crawl inside? or have you a go-gadget device?

Mine are on grass, with the cube/run moved every couple of days. Before I adapted my run panel into a door flap, I bought a child's rake from the garden centre and reached in the small door with that, raked poos into a pile, and then into a dustpan, with the pile headed for the compost heap.

Looks like everyone has their own way of doing things, we have 2 chooks in an Eglu and:-

- empty poop tray twice a week

- clean out with soapy water every weekend (inc roosting bars)

- change shredded paper every week (sometimes lasts longer)

- spray whole eglu with pet disinfectant after cleaning

- rake the bark every night to keep it tidy (gets chucked about)

- add garlic powder after every feed

All of this and touch wood they stay clean and smell free!
