xScrunchee
Mmm, I have found an object on the floor of my walk in run but am not sure what it is. It looks like a cat/fox toe It is brown and black, it looks as though it may have a little remaining nail on one end of it. I cannot see any blood on it or inside the run. It hasn't stopped raining all day so I am not sure if there was blood outside. Would a cat/fox tear off their own toe trying to get at my girls?? Not 100% sure if it is the complete toe or if it has just completely skinned the toe (I hope that the animal is ok and not suffering in pain somewhere) The holes in the wire are about an inch square so not sure how a toe would get stuck Edited July 10, 2008 by Guest
Snowy
Ewwww! How odd. Any photos?
xScrunchee
I should have taken a pic straight away but instead I covered it in selotape so that I could have a good look at it without having to actually touch it as it grossed me out It now just looks like a squashed lump of fur wrapped in selotape
craftyhunnypie
A big hairy catapillar? Emma.x
xScrunchee
A big hairy catapillar? Emma.x I wish it was but sadly it is not. It is animal fur attached to skin with what looks like a toe nail coming out of one end. Quite foxy looking in my opinion. The main thing which is baffling me is-would a fox or cat be so desperate to get my girls that they would literally rip their own toe off?? Duckmomma
OOoooh Unwrap it, go on Wanna see a pic, I'll be wondering all night what it was now If maybe the fox/cat was climbing up the wire and slipped it might well rip a nail or tip of the toe off. Maybe it will put it off the idea of going after your girls
Ain't Nobody Here
Eeugh, how gross . Only good thing might be that he'd not be in a hurry to come back, hopefully .
Stevie
Foxs go mad trying to get at hens behind wire and it must have been a wee bit too eager! Wont be comming back now though-unless he's using crutches..!
mrs chook
Could it have been torn off on netting? Sounds tho. Just make sure your ladies are safely tucked up.
xChicken04x
Possibly part of a mouse or rat, that the girls half eaten?

xScrunchee
Not part of a mouse or rat neither. That's what I first thought it might be-part of a mouse but on closer inspection you can see where the toe was attached to the foot plus the fur is browny/blacky not mousey

Egluntyne
How big is it? Was there much blood around?
xScrunchee
I'd say that it is bigger than a cats toe. No blood that I could see but I'm not sure if the blood was just washed away in the heaps of rain we have had the past couple of days. I am going to go and try to take a pic of the selotape wrapped toe for the curious ones amoung you Not sure how a pic will come out but I'll try and get it from it's best side
Egluntyne
We'll all be fascinated to see it. Was it fox coloured?
xScrunchee
These are as clear as I can get them. You really cannot see the colour properly though Wish I hadn't wrapped it in tape now Hope they help a little (I tried to resize them so I hope they don't come out too big)
Egluntyne
Not as gory as I was expecting. It looks too small to be "fox". Do you have weasels and stoats down your way?
xScrunchee
None that I have ever seen The lack of gore may dissapoint some people I think Mmm, wonder what on earth it is?? I keep thinking that maybe it is not a toe but when I have a good look at it I would say that I'm 90% sure it is, just not sure what it is from. It is not raining right now so I am going to go outside and have a good look all around their run. Hoping that it's not someones poor cat Will let you know if there is more 'evidence' outside
xScrunchee
Well-there is no blood that I can see. The only thing that might be worth mentioning is that a couple of days ago I found fox poo sort of sprayed up my run. It was on the summer shade at the end of the run, on the wire and some had gone on the run floor, like it was sort of sprayed at the run. If something was caught in the wire by it's foot/toe-perhaps it pooed in the panic?? The mystery continues.....................
Cooks
ooh I didn't want gore, I was just intrigued.. that does look odd doesn't it!, very diferent shades of fur aswell! I'd be interested to see what others make of it.
