Salmon Faverolle is it a cock?

Recommended Posts

could any one who has experienec of this breed have a look for me, the breeder was unsure although said she was fairly confident she is a hen, she has a tiny comb and her wing tips are white. I have google imaged and can't find any either mnale or female that look quite right, she looks about halfway inbetween to me but I am no expert.

Sorry but I'm 99% sure that is a faverolle cockerel. Definitely got male feathering, but the pictures aren't very clear. If you look at this picture, yours looks like a male and the difference between the males and single female (lighter bottom right) is obvious: http://faverolles.googlepages.com/Groupshot.jpg/Groupshot-full.jpg

Try PMing faverollehen, she breeds faverolle's so she will probably know.

what age do they start to crow? also he/she is 15weeks and has no prominant comb, is very gentle and another hen appears to be top hen. Would that happen if it was a cock?

Is it all about the colouring because bob does definatley have the male colouring looking at pictures but he/she seems to have the female body shape.

Also if it was as simple as the colouring would the breeder not have known that it was a male?

Can you tell that despite my best efforts I am getting rather attached to BOB.

If he is a cockrel any chance that he won't be a noisy one?

I found out that I had two cockerels when they were about six months old. They had not crowed but they had started mounting the other birds. Mine were brahmas though which are slow developing birds. You may have a different experience. I was lucky and I found a local brahma breeder who offered to take the boys. She introduced me to their girlfriends and showed me the huge field where they were going to live. She even said that she was going to try them out living together as they were used to each other and so friendly. She did think that I was nuts though, sobbing away as I cuddled them.

It is hard when you have grown attached to them and find that they can't stay. I have an ex-batt at the moment who crowed on the first day we had her but then settled down quietly and I am sure that she has laid eggs. We have had her since December but she has suddenly developed huge wattles, a massive comb and spurs. I'm just hoping that she doesn't crow. At the moment the neighbours love her but I'm sure that would change rapidly after a few sessions of crowing.

Fingers crossed.xxxx

,my neighbour has already grown rather attached, this morning I was sitting watching them  when I saw the neighbour sneak out to have a peek, I told her that BOB may have to go back and she sounded wuite upset.

It is a lovely bird and even if it has to go back I shall be glad I got to spend time with it, all a learning curve isn't it.

having looked at everything I can find I am still completly undecided.

Bob has the colouring more simular to a male bird, but not exactly like, there are essentials missing like bob does not have a black beard and not many back feAThers and is very mottldley, bob also doesn't look much like a female, is too dark although has the body shaope of a female.

I wonder if females can have different colouring or if BOb is a mix breed, will; just have to wait and see but we are getting rather attched to her so i hope she is a she.

On the plus side it has forced me to do a lot of research into breeds

Hard to tell with your pics but id go for boy with the colouring, I saw quite a few when i collected my girl and the boys are all dark, I was told that the Salmon is the only colour type where the boy and girl are completely different colouring.

This is my girl ella at 10 weeks

Ordinarily I would suggest the slow intro method but I think you might get away with it as it is still early days. If you offer lots of distractions, spray them all with Tee Tree or vinegar so that they all smell the same, and maybe sneak it in at night.

right am going to see if I can take him back this evening after dh gets home from work and swap him for an amber link, by the time we get back home it will be bed time anyway so hopefully just put the newbie in the cube and the others will join her.

will spray them all, is citronella OK as i already have some made up for spraying the cube so they already smell of thet.

Do that sound OK?

My eldest daughter is getting very stroppy about it and saying see will tell bob not to be noisy. bless.
