Clur
Had to say good-bye to our dog today as at 17, she'd finally given up her zest for life. She wasn't suffering any pain, but had little quality of life and had lost dignity as she'd get disorientated trying to go to the toilet etc. I took her to the vet and cuddled her to the end. Very upsetting at the best of times but DS aged 6 is distraught and has just cried himself to sleep. Have explained how Sally had a good life with us (we were her third home and she'd been neglected previously) but it's not easy at any age let alone 6. Our 3 year old is quite happy to wave to her in Heaven! I know we did the right thing, and am thankful we had 11 years with her, but it's just sooo sad

Clur
I am grateful we had so much time with her, as at the stage we got her she wouldn't have lasted much longer. Just DS's reaction breaks my heart too

alih
very sorry to ear your news - it's amazing how attached we become to our dogs - mine died when I was 27 and about to get married and I still wept buckets when my mum rang to tell me - we had had him since i was 11. It will pass with time but it's a very sad time.
BeckyBoo
What a shame, I'm thinking of you and your poor DS, give them an extra big hug from all of us here. It's such a sad thing for a little one to try and get to grips with. Lots of hugs to you all, Mrs Bertie
deejmum
So sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose a dear dog. We lost our two old dogs Sammy and Tasha two summers ago. We planted a lovely tree which will always be known as their tree. I hope you find something nice to remember Sally by. Your six year old will find it hard but will bounce back, given a good distraction. We have two new dogs now, and the kids adore them, but even the kids still remember sammy and tasha with happy memories. I hope you will have enjoy your memories as time goes by. Remember you rescued her from a life no where near as good as the one you gave her.
rusky123
So sorry Clur, even though you knew it was the right thing do it still hurts like crazy. Your 6 year old son will come to terms with it quite soon. My dad died when my eldest was 6, a few days later her gerbil died, she was totally devastated, but was glad that her Grandad had Tiddles company in Heaven, it comforted her a lot. Isnt it funny the way kiddies think and bounce back. XX Moyna
Joojoo
So sorry to hear your sad news . It's awful when you lose a much loved member of your family, but you should comfort yourself by thinking of all the love you had for and from her. Bringing her into your home must have been fantastic for her and it sounds like for the last 11 years she has had a wonderful life. x

Shirl
Sorry to hear you had to make such a difficult decision. I've had to do it myself and it is so much harder than having a vet tell you that it needs to be done. Hugs to you all.

chickencam
So sorry it is really hard to say goodbye to an old friend. Our old cat who was approx 19 died last summer and it took 2 cats to begin to fill the gap in our family, we had her for 17 years and she too had been neglected previously. It is a testement to your good care that she lived as long as she did.
LisaP
I am so sorry Clur - hugs to you and your family. Great that she had a happy life with you. We lost our dog in January at the age of only 6 and it was very difficult for us and the children so I understand how hard it is. For us it has helped to keep photos of her and her predecessor.
