Cate in NZ
strange question - but does everyone speak English? or will you have to learn another language? what language do Maori (sp) speak? The Maori have their own language, but for years it was a dying language, pretty much on the verge of extinction (a bit like Welsh I suppose ). However in recent years there has been a real upsurgence in Maori culture and pride and so on, and the language is recovering. All children learn Te Reo Maori at school, and most Maori's are bilingual (or so I believe). I believe that they really appreciate it if we try with their language and I am planning on taking some basic language lessons, but in the main it is pretty usual to communicate in English. Phew. A good phrase to know...Kia Ora.....no, not a fruit squash, it's Maori for "Hello/ Welcome" Their culture is fascinating, very spiritual, a lot of looking back to ancestral influences and so on. I have so much to learn I start work on Monday, 9am
