Slow Cooker

Recommended Posts

Which make/model does everyone use? We used to have one but then I stopped using it when I was at home when my daughters were younger as I just use to use the oven on low temps.

Need a new one as we stored the old one in the garage and mice decided it was a perfect nest size for them along with lots of other things that were in there

Need one big enough for at least four adults. Thanks :)

oh - just read the last bit of your post, mine is no good then! I've got a small slow cooker from Lakeland. It's brilliant, I use it more in winter but it's so useful - takes 10 mins or so to do the veg, etc, and then I stick the pot in the fridge overnight, put it in the cooker and turn it on in the morning, and I've got lovely steaming hot stew/chili/soup etc, when i get home.

Lakeland do a larger size, I'm sure.

Thanks Olly :) Will ahve a look at Lakeland.

Two of my "adults" are teenagers but invariably they eat more than we do and we often have their friends arriving at meal times as well and I feel guilty if we're eating and I don't feed them as well

I have a Morphy Richards one that has a capacity of 6.5 litres which equates to a working capacity of 4.5litres they also do a smaller one which is 4.5 litres and will hold 2.5 litres.

It is excellent and so much more economical than using the oven :D

I have the same model and have a chicken (not one of our own!) roasting in it as we speak.

It is superb. I cannot fault it and use it all the time. When the handle came off the lid they immediately put another one in the post to me

I think I paid £25 on offer, but I would happily buy it again at full price.

I have the Morphy Richards one too. I shopped around and found it cheaper at Amazon (about £16 when I bought mine) than Argos, both of which were cheaper than Lakeland.

I've used it a lot and it's great for cookng a big batch and then freezing individual portions. It also cleans easily and both the ceramic bowl and the lid can be put in the diswasher. I'd recommend it :D

Worth keeping an eye on the offers at Makro if there is one near you. They currently have one on offer for £13 - 3.5 litres. The 6 litre version was on offer a couple of months ago for £15! (wish I knew I wanted one then  )

Wow, that was a bargain. Our Makro isn't too near so may not be worth going to.

Thanks again for your help everyone :)

How do you roast a chicken in one? Does it come out more like roast or casseroled and how long does it take. My family don't like chicken on the bone in casseroles.

It comes out a cross between the 2! I put a lemon, some fresh herbs and a bulb of garlic up its bum. Put it in the slow cooker upside down with about half an inch of water in the bottom and set to cook. If I am feeling paranoid I put it on high for an hour and then drop it to low for the rest of the time, or if I am out fo rthe day I just put it on low for the whole time. My last one had an auto function which meant it started things off on high and dropped them to low for rest of the cooking time.

You can generally leave them in there for as long as you need, but I tend to cook them for a minimum of 8 hours.

Don't forget that by batch cooking and freezing you will saving both time and money :D Having said that mine does take up most of the cupboard that it is in

Yep, think I'm going be doing twice, if not triple the amount of chilli I normally do and freezing some.

I've a double cupboard under my hob and that's already nearly full with a steamer, breadmaker, George Forman and toaster. It won't fit in there.I just know hubby is going to go mad when he sees the size of it particularly as he doesn't like stews anyway

Oh to have a big kitchen!
