I've tried bark, sand and now woodchippings and love the woodchippings best of all. Easy to maintain as the droppings disappear into them. They keep the smell down to a bare minimum and once we've finished with them, we bag them all up and dig them into the allotment! I've only needed to change them every 3-4 months when they start to look a bit dingy or the dust level is bad. The Cube always has a layer of dust on it from them flinging the chippings around!!

I think Hemcore is the best as it's citronella impregnated so keeps the chooks smelly nice. I also think that having a covered run is a must otherwise the hemcore doesn't last as long and goes all claggy and muddy, then the poor chooks end up in a mess. Our chooks hate heavy rain so they need cover.

I'm using Easibed at the mo as it was cheaper than Aubiose when I last went - I'm quite impressed with it. I really liked Aubiose too (found it nicer to handle than Hemcore) but I'm finding Easibed seems better in the wet (my run is covered with a winter and summer shade but rain seems to get in anyway!)

Hiya

After someone elses recommendation I think we are going to go for woodchips over the autumn/winter. I did want woodchips rather than bark as I think it will be nicer for them to scratch around in. These seem quite good from B&Q and I think 3 packs should sort run. Does anyone have any experience with these in the wet weather or is a roof on run only option?

Thanks, Heather
