Cubes finally coming to america!!!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

Yes, I had thought about that but concluded that since I don't actually need the runs I'd be paying for unwanted runs and would still only get 6 chickens in the 2 eglus rather than 10 in a cube. :?

Thanks for the thought though...

You dont have to buy the runs, Omlet sell the eglu seperately can't remember if the are £240 or £260 without the run.

I was just going to say what you said MadMitch. Also 2 run less eglus are smaller to pack than a cube with its 5 boxes.

Wouldnt need to pack the eglus as Omlet USA sell them

I think we should lobby them for cubes in the US...

I didn't know they sold the eglu with run...interesting...

Think it might not be economical - 2 eglus=1 cube but doesn't house as many chickens.

Also, although Omlet US sells eglus, the shipping charges are shocking (about 85 quid) because they are shipped from Iowa I think.

They are shipped from Iowa or Idaho and the shipping is about $185.00US. They are also shipped via grayhound bus and need to be picked up at the depot. There are some US distributors but because the Omlet is a UK company I went through OmletUS as opposed to a US company which sells the Eglu.

Ok, am back on my quest for a cube...but now trying from the other side of the atlantic...sigh...

Thankyou so much for the offers to swap slots that I did and didn't see in time...

Some questions:

If you buy a cube without the run and without chickens, I understand it comes by courier. Now, does it come in a box? If so, what are the box dimensions and weight? Or if not in a box, what are the dimensions and weight?

Would everything but the outer shell fit inside - like the wheels, feeders etc?

Am looking into ocean freight...but am worried about import tax more than shipping cost :?

May seem a little obsessive but really want a cube for its insulation properties for the snowy winters here, ability to house 10 chickens andeasy cleaning, and because less stylish wooden hen houses are here cost even more than the cube + shipping would!

Welcome to the USA... :D I also would be interested in the sizes dimensions and weight of the packaging of the cube. I will also contact Omlet and share the information here on the forum. I'm hoping I might be able to get UPS, DHL, or FedEx to pick up at Omlet and deliver to the US provided the cost of shipping isn't too high.

Edited to add: I just got off the phone with Claire from Omlet and she has informed me that the Cube without a run would still come in 5 boxes and the shipping via DHL, UPS, or FedEx would be as high as 2000.00 (not sure if this is dollars or pounds). Also because of the demand for the cube in the UK (6 - 8 week lead time) it may not be available in the US until the end of 2009. She is going to email me the size, dimensions and weight of each box so I can do some more research on my own. Once the information is recieved from Omlet I will be checking with the airlines to see the cost of flying it back here to the US.

Claire works very quickly.. :D:D Here is a copy of the email she has just sent to me.

Hi

I knew I had the information somewhere!

The details are in kilogrammes and metres I'm afraid, so I hope you are

able to convert okay if needs be.

Box A = 25kg, 1.25m x 0.25m x 0.25m

Box B = 16kg, 1.25m x 0.7m x 0.2m

Box C = 21kg, 1.0m x 0.85m x 0.3m

Box D = 16kg, 0.85m x 0.85m x 0.25m

Box E = 20kg, 1.2m x 1.0m x 0.25m

Best regards

Clare

Fabulous info...

What annoys me is that we could have sent several cubes over with my furniture - we had 5500 lbs left in our container allowance - so it would've shipped for free. Sigh.

Is one of those boxes a run? I want one without a run.

Ocean freight seems to be the cheapest option so far, but I've read import tax could be charged on both the cube AND the shipping!

Am still hatching a plan...(excuse the pun)

I did tell Clare I didn't need a run and she said it was still 5 boxes (flat packed) but looking at the picture George posted in your other post (disassembled cube?) he had six and an extra box (run extension) so maybe she didn't hear me when I said no run.

Clare explained that Omlet is a really small company, and no one anticapated the popularity of the product and that they have so many requests to fullfill in the UK (for the Cube) it might not be available here in the US until the end of 2009.

I'm wondering if Virgin Atlantic or British Airways could ship it as freight on a passanger plane? I might have to travel to the UK soon.

Mark:

Yes I thought about that - was thinking about getting my sister to bring it as her luggage when she comes next summer. Problem is weight limit and multiple boxes. Oversized and excess baggage fees are very high...

Plus still need it to come through customs with risk of import tax...

If the boxes were sent separately, each one would have nominal value as spare parts, its only valuable as a whole, which is why I was considering sending it as separate boxes or two lots a week apart or something! Less value - less tax...

Shipping by ocean freight as a whole was like £224, but £96 of that was DHL to the port - could cut the cost there by having it delivered by a man and van or something?

Still import tax worry though...sigh...am racking my brains.

Loopy, why not find out what the import tax is actually going to be? The US INternational Trade Commission should be able to help you. The Customs and Border Protecon people will be able to give you the classification code for importing a plastic chicken house, and then the USITC will be able to tell you what the duty rate is on that particular classification code.

ETA: or contact Omlet and ask them what import classification code they use for importing Eglus. The Cube will be the same as that.

ETA: I believe that poultry keeping machinery (they mean brooders really) do not attract duty. Not sure a Cube counts as "machinery" These are classification 8436.21.00 00 (brooders) or 8436.29.00 (other poultry keeping machinery)

What port do they ship from? We are a big, lovely forum....I'm sure there's somebody on here who may live near the port, could get the stuff delivered to them and then take it to the port?! I'm saying this as Ms Useless though as I'm in the middle of the country so nowhere near a port....:wink:

Wow, Hazel...am impressed!

Am still working on it...box E is causing me headache...is just that bit too big...think I am ok with boxes A-D!!!

Anyone know if box E has any unecessary packaging? I'm guessing it the base and therefore not squashable. Hmmm.
