Free range chicken

Recommended Posts

I can live without fast food chicken but I crave chicken pasties. I know that I can make them and I do but sometimes it would be nice to be able to buy one.

I know that M&S use only free range eggs in their own brand products. Does anybody know if they use free range chicken as well? I did ask in store and I was told that the chicken pasties were free range but I wasn't convinced. The assistant had to ask someone who asked someone else, etc.

I will e-mail them tonight...just thought someone might know.

Thanks,

Jan

M&S use all free range eggs but not chicken. Their standards are very high and they have their own suppliers and inspectors. Their labels will state origin and you can call customer services Janty, they are really good :D

I can't see why they can't endorse free range chicken as well as free range eggs. Their free range chickens are delicious but they also do the "buy one, get one half price" on their non free range ones which is really annoying. I'd rather pay more and get a happy chicken any day, especially as one £8 chicken lasts us 3 days - a bargain!

Just had this e-mail from M&S.

Dear Ms,

Thank you for your email, we always appreciate our customers taking thetime to get in touch with us. All M&S fresh chicken are British Oakham chickens - from known dedicated farms - which are slower growing birds - exclusive to M&S . They are reared to M&S' own high welfare standards. These insist on a reduced stocking density, a slower growing bird, the provision of environmental enrichment and meeting lighting requirements. M&S also sells Free-range Oakham chicken and Organic chicken. M&S's commitment to raising the standards of animal welfare wasrecognised recently by Compassion in World Farming, who named us Compassionate Supermarket for 2007/08 (and also in 2005/2006), and by the RSPCA in their Good Business Awards 2007. All Marks & Spencer chickens (including egg laying hens) have freedom toroam and display their natural behaviour - no Marks & Spencer birds are caged.

Thank you again for contacting us. I hope this helps you and please don't hesitate to contact us again inthe future.

Kind Regards Josie

Wow, any thoughts of going on to politics Ms Josie from M & S! A good straight forward answer thats what I like! LOL

I know that M&S recently were in trouble over deceiving adverts about these 'Oakham Farm' chickens. There is no such place! Don't know why they still use this phrase in marketing???

Read the labels or if in doubt go somewhere else!

Do you have a local deli/butcher/farm shop that makes their own FR chicken pies?

Good luck!
