Ain't Nobody Here

Hurricane in Cuba

Recommended Posts

My brother has been in Cuba for a week and was due to be back today. We've heard nothing from him and my mother is assuming the worst. (She's never a positive thinker at the best of times.) I'm not too worried (yet) but am wondering if I can find out anything to allay her fears.

He didn't leave his flight details so we can't call the airline. We have the name of his hotel but there's no answer (mum thinks the whole island will be incommunicado, of course  ). The Cuban embassy is only open a couple of hours on Saturdays so I'll try them soon.

Any ideas?

Panic over  .

Called Airtours on the off chance, they said none of the flights out had been affected so called my brother's mobile. He's at Gatwick & gets back to Edinburgh about 6pm.

Phoned mum to tell her - she really had got herself in a state so was very relieved.

I think my brother had no idea how the hurricane was being reported over here and was on track with his return journey, so didn't think phoning anyone was necessary. He should've known our mum would think the worst - she always does  .

Tempted to say "told you so" repeatedly to mum but refrained  .

Glad he wasn't affected by the hurricane. That said it's not been reported here that I've heard of, has there been a lot of damage over there :? .

In situations like that the Foreign & Commonwealth Office are usually a good source of info about goings on overseas and how British citizens in those countries could be affected. I'm having internet connection problems so I'm not sure if this link is correct, but it's something like www.fco.gov.uk :D If that doesn't work give it a google

Thanks for your posts :) .

Kate, it was reported a bit here but more on the lines of potential damage and the possibility of it hitting New Orleans.

Needless to say, my mother totally over-reacted (as usual) and assumed the worst. Nothing I could say could reassure her, she just wouldn't listen to any rational arguments.

My brother's comment when I asked about the hurricane? "There was a bit of a breeze on the day we left."

It is difficult to get news isn't it? - I'm glad all is well with your brother.

My sister and family were made homeless by Hurricane Hugo 4 years ago - they lived in the Cayman Islands. You very rarely get news of the Caymans , the Governor suppresses any news because they depend on the tourist trade.

My sister and her two. aged 1 and 3 managed to get on the last plane out to Miami and her husband had left the day before as he was working in Miami for a week. She had to come and live with us for 4 months while her OH stayed to sort out their house. Cayman took a direct hit that time as well.....but no news reached here

You can sometimes find forums which have photos and news.......

I just caught up with this thread ANH. Glad to hear your brother has made it out. He's so funny "There was a bit of a breeze.... :D Just saw on the news that New Orleans is under a mandatory evacuation. Oh and by the way I wouldn't have been able to resits throwing in a couple of "I told you so's!" while doing a bit of a jig

A poor lady who was on the news last night being evacuated from New Orleans had only just got the keys to her new home the previous day, which replaced the home she lost to Katrina :( At least it looks like the local/government officials are dealing with it better this time.

My daughter and boyfriend are still there, they were supposed to fly home today but flights have been cancelled. She is staying near Holguin and i spoke to her yesterday and the hotel seemed to be ready, can't get through yet today but its to be expected with everyone trying to call, still worrying though till i hear from them!
