Jillus
I am just sitting here waiting for the SSPCA to arrive as I have phoned them to tell them that one of my beautiful white doves is in the chimney. She went missing yesterday afternoon and this morning I heard fluttering noises in the chimney and spotted some white feathers on the hearth. Thank goodness we never lit the fire last night. I have heard nothing for a couple of hours now but have looked into tthe chimney with a powerful torch and the chimney is full of ledges and hiding places so goodness knows where she is. I feel really shaky and upset at his especially after the debacle with my first lot of doves. It is Lily that is stuck, the smallest shy dove so goodenss knows how she got into the situation. I will let you know what transpires but after hearing nothing for a while it does not look too good. Just wish I had someone here with me. KimmyCustard
Oh dear, why are some birds so daft as to get in these positions? We have just got a top to go on our chimney pot so we dont get another wood pidgeon nest and cooked birdie if we light our woodburner, I'd hate that. Good luck, let us know how she is. Jillus
The man from the SSPCA has just been and has advised me to shine a light up the chimney, old anglepoise lamp, and to see if that tempts her down. There are so many ledges in the chimney as it is an old design with twists and turns in it. He says it can take two to three days for birds to come down and we will just have to wait and see what happens. Meanwhile I remain covered in soot from my attempts at seeing higher than was wise. I will keep you posted about progress if any.
KimmyCustard
Jillus Is there any way you can use food to tempt her down as well as the lamp? Is there anything that a dove smells and would follow to get her to go in the right direction? I know nothing about doves but all creatures love treats and are greedy enough to rush to get some when its on offer! Fingers crossed for you and little dove. abwsco
Fingers crossed that you can get your poor dove down the chimney.
tweecy
I had a pigeon up my chimney once, the trouble is birds fall down them, but there's not enough room for them to flap their wings to get back out. I was told to keep the bottom of the chimney (hearth) well lit with a bright lamp - heavy base or anchor it so it doesn't get knocked over if the bird comes down in a panic, it will make it's way towards the light, and awful as it sounds a bit of weight loss might help if the chimney is tight. Cover as much furniture as you can with old curtains etc. that you won't mind throwing away, you might need to redecorate afterwards. I am sure this will have a happy ending - our pigeon came out eventually, but it took a few days and it was a terrible worry.
Egluntyne
We had a pigeon fall down one of our chimneys once. It brought an awful lot of soot with it. Good luck, I hope you manage to get it out successfully.
Jillus
I've put a net over the front of the fireplace, a lamp inside the fireplace pointing up the sky and am sitting here hoping we don't have a great soot fall when she does come down. I would be happier though if I could still hear her flapping, it has been quiet for a while now although the SSPCA guy said she would not perish so quickly. First thing I am doing tomorrow is getting a firm to come and put an anti pigeon/bird thing on the chimney stack.

Gamebird
Lily, what a lovely name for a dove. I do hope she sees sense and comes down soon. She may come down when it gets dark outside and her attention will then be drawn to your lamp. Fingers crossed.
chickenlass
We have had a couple of birds down our chimmney this summer...I had some work men here at the time and when I told one of them I thought I had a rat in the wood burning stove, as I could hear scratching ,the idiot open the top of the fire up [where you put the logs in] and a small bird flew out. It went crazy around the living room leaving black sooty marks all over the ceiling and windows I managed to catch it in a large fishing net in the end. I feel sure your dove will eventually come into the crate for you to help her...I'll keep everything crossed she appears very soon bless her. Jillus
Just about to go to bed but the dove is still alive, feathers coming down the chimney. we have a sweep coming tomorrow with a soft brush to try and get her out and also the SSPCA guy rang back to check how things are. Thanks for all your good wishes, maybe in the morning I will come down and find her sitting in the grate.

Olly
good luck - it's bad enough getting a bird down the chimney, but when it's one of your own doves that must be really worrying. Hope she comes safely down soon.
Jillus
No noise from the chimney this morning but a few more feathers have floated down, the sweep will be here at noon with a very soft brush and is going to try and get the dove down somehow. Jillus
She's ALIVE, the chimney sweep just left and now the little grey dove is back on the dove cote, looking a bit dishevelled but perky enough and bright eyed. Thanks for all the supportive messages!!
