OMG I couldn't beleeeeve it

Recommended Posts

Mine have had them once they move to 'big' school.

I don't like them having them. I know they say they don't harm you but the noise that happens to the tv, radio, computer etc when a message or call comes in puts me right off.

I tend to just use mine for texting. I always moan at my hubby if he rings me on it.

Its a shame the little girl didn't join in with the party, perhaps she was nervous and it was like a security blanket?

My neice got a mobile at 9 before her 13 year old brother - but thats just because she moans more :wink:

Some of my daughters friends (9 years old) have mobile phones but i'm not sure of the necessity. They are the kids who tend to be the ones who are already seriously worried about their looks. DD started going out and about around the local area this summer holidays BUT we gave her all the usual rules. We knew exactly where she was and who with and she knows that should she get into any bother she comes straight hme or goes to a shop or whatever is appropriate.

There was an article in the Independent at the weekend about radiation going into childrens brains and until we know the consequences, i'm not going to let DD have a mobile. I managed without one as a child and my mother was over-protective, hence by the time i was a teenager, i lied about where i was. I like to think that i'm being less over-protective of DD and trusting her to handle situations. Of course, life is made easier by the fact that many of her friends are no more than a few streets away and we don't live in an isolated area, i guess you have to do what's right for your situation.

Mobiles make Mum's apron strings reach a bit further when the children have to stretch their wings a bit :D .

I like that :D

I do agree with most that 7 is to young for a mobile. Mine will get them one once they start secondary school.

As others have said, it was a shame that she did not join in.

Also my girl can't even remember to bring her cardigan home so she could never be responsible for a phone or other gadget.

EVERY day we have to go and get James's coat, jumper, fleece etc from lost property! He doesn't even always manage to put his stuff in his book bag before he comes out!

I actually think the girl in question was using it as a tool to impress - last year I was at a party where she kept coming in to touch up her lipstick. It didn't really work - the rest of the kids were more impressed with being allowed to run around topless after they all got wet!

Both my sons (9 & 10) have mobile phones, out of practicality. We live in area that begs to be explored, and with a young baby as well, it's easier to phone the pair of them to come home for meals, than to go out searching for them. They both have ancient old bricks that were a couple of pounds from ebay, with PAYG sims. They've both still got the credit that was put on them last Christmas Eve.

Caitlin (5) has a mobile too - it doesn't have a charger, and probably wouldn't work even of it was charged, but she's happy enough with it!

James has one like that too! Anymore would be overkill as he can't read much!

My DD has no interest in her mobile phone and many of her friends (if they even have one) are the same. I insisted on her taking one when she started cycling to school (yr 6) - but it was well hidden as she thought her mother was fussing.

Now she gets the bus to secondary school (in yr 9) and I make her take a phone for emergencies as the bus drops them off still 2miles from home. The school has a strict 'no phones' policy in school, but I am amazed at other schools in the area where kids spend lunchtimes sitting texting and swapping music on their phones.

It is always us forcing her to take it or charge for safety only.

My son (yr7, 11yrs old) had his first old brick - one of my castoffs - at the end of yr 6 to collect all his friends mobiles so they could , in theory, keep in touch when they all moved on to secondary school. We've since upgraded it to one with a camera so he can take pics of his family & animals to keep with him - an up-to-date "brag book" I suppose. The idea is to have mine upgraded too so we can send pics from one to another, although I'm terrified of the new technology & am happy with my rapidly dying brick, so the time will come soon I think!

He is at boarding school during the week, so he has one to keep in touch, rather than queuing at the pay phone as they used to. I feel happier knowing that my apron strings have been extended - what a wonderful thought!! - and he can ring/text whenever he's in need, in trouble or just needs a chat.

He did get told off the other day though, as his big sister had rung the wrong brother (both start with To - Toby & Tom, and as he said in her defence "I'll let her off mummy, she's pregnant!!") & left a long message on the wrong phone, he was sitting in church at the time & was hauled up by the Head-master & House-master. Apparently, his phone has a setting where texts are silent but calls are not! Oooops  ! He's now worked out how to silence everything!

My daughter, at 8 hasn't got one & won't until she also goes to up to secondary school. They are little too short a time these days, she's asked for lipstick already, but is happy with Nivea pearl at weekends only though. A friend of hers got into trouble for wearing it at school.....!

I only just got my first mobile, and im 15 ( yr 11)!! I just didn't need one!! All my friends always have the latest phones and two even have the new iphone!! Its just ridiculous!!

I have all the latest gadgets etc etc, but I have to pay for it, parents wont contribute at all. Which I think is perfectly fair. Also ive earnt it, so am not going to break it etc etc. (kitbag - I thought you were getting the iPhone?)
