Sarah B
Hi All, Hope you are all well, not been on here for a bit. Wondered if anyone can give me some advice? Two and a half weeks ago I got a severe ear infection which was affecting my outer, middle and to a lesser extent my inner ear. After very strong antibiotics it finally cleared up and the pain went away, but I'm still left with balance problems and vertigo. The Dr put me on Prochlorperazine on Friday for it but I have stopped taking them yesterday because they make me weepy and so bombed out I can't function. I still have the balance issues. The infection cleared up mid last week. Has anyone else had this and how long was your balance affected after the infection had gone? It's horrible. Oh I still have restricted hearing as well. Thanks in advance. Sarah x
Seagazer
Poor you. I hope it goes soon. I have problems with my ears every now and again. When it started I actually thought a vein had gone in my head or something as it was so sudden and then I felt so dizzy. Every now and again I get sore ears again and my balance goes a bit squiffy. Luckily its not so bad that I have to take drugs but it is horrible. I think there is something they can do about vertigo by doctors manipulating your head but I'm not sure if that is to do with a certain disease or not, sorry I'm a bit vague but I remember watchingon television cure this lady with a few sessions. I also get tinnitus sometimes and it is most annoying. Anyway good luck and get better soon.
The Dogmother
May I suggest that you go to see a good osteopath? Mine cleared my balance/ear problems. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Both of you have mentioned head manipulation - how interestng! I thought this would just be as it is till the inner ear gets back to normal but I'm going to look into this, thanks to you both! Egluntyne
I had this a couple of years ago. After antibiotics and prochlorperazine, which zombified me and conversely, made me feel very sick it did eventually settle.....but it did take 6 weeks to be back to normal. I had to stop driving because my spatial awareness went awol too. Really feel for you.

Chook n Boo Mum
Hi Sarah, I know a very good osteopath who's based in Sidlesham. Don't know how far you'd want (should you decide to take that route!) you'd be happy to travel. If you are East of Ports, it may be too far, but west of Ports may be ok. You could pop in on the way past my door for a cuppa, slice of cake & chooky cuddle too! Her link is here http://www.livingelements.co.uk/index-2.html. Her name is Gayle Palmer & in my opinion is wonderful! Sha x
baby bears mum
Poor you. I had labrynthitis this time last year and the balance thing (or lack of it) is so debilitating. I was given Serc 16 which was absolutely brilliant although it still took me a couple of months to get back to normal (if I ever was ). I also had acupuncture on my neck (for something else) around the same time as it cleared and I do wonder if that helped to. Lets face it anythings worth a try. Hope you feel better soon. Sending you hugs.

Nicola H
I had a nasty ear infection that started last year and found that although the antibiotics seemed to clear the infection I still had partial hearing and vertigo, so i went back to my GP who refered me to a consultant at the hospital. He said that the infection was very deep that is why my hearing was still affected, the treatment i had involved him cleaning my ears with suction then having dressings packed into my ears, the treatment wasn't very nice but it cleared the infection then i had to use Acetate ear drops for 8 months, I am finally clear of the infection and my hearing is back to normal I just have to aviod getting water in my ears. That sounds nasty Nicola, according to my GP the infection has gone but he said the balance and hearing will take a while to go back to normal? I will give it a week and a half and if no dramatic improvement will go back. Like you I now am not to get water in my ears which makes hair washing a right pain. Glad you are back to normal now. ubereglu
I suggest that you go back to the doctor to see if there's anything else that they can prescribe. A girl in my year had this problem and was off school, having to be home tutored for about a year-yes it can get that bad.
