panic attacks, advice pls

Recommended Posts

erm, okay I suppose, had a bad day with dad. We've been given some "Dozic" to try and keep him calm. Things are just getting worse, he's hardly eating and he look so thin he just reminds me of a concentration camp victim. We think he'll have to go into a nursing home so we're all very upset at the mo. Don't know what I'd do without my hubbie, he's a total rock.

Thanks for asking though, it was very sweet of you xxxxx

thanks Lynda, it's horrible watching someone you love just fade away and seeing what it's doing to mum is so hard too. Mum and me just sat there, hugging each other and crying last night. Nothing can prepare you for this.

My heart goes out to you Poet. My mum was in a coma for a week before she died and we spent every day at her bedside, and before my sister died we had to watch her fading away and getting more and more confused. It is awful. It was after my parents died that I developed the panic attacks, so I'm sure your stressful situation is contributing to your panic attacks. Don't be too hard on yourself re the attacks, it is hardly surprising that your subconscious is feeling very vulnerable in the circumstances.

Lots of ((((hugs)))) coming your way

x

Justine, I've just caught up with your thread. Well done on your achievement - I'm so pleased for you that you managed it :) .

I'm really sorry to hear about your Dad though. I, too, had thought things had perhaps settled down for you all. You know I've had the same situation with my Dad but I have to say, he's doing fine in his nursing home. The decision was taken out of our hands at the very start, though, so in some ways it was easy for us. I hope things work out OK.

thanks Lynda and vicki. xxxxx

Poet, we've just heard the Radio 4 Sunday Appeal, which was by Lady Taverner (Sir John Taverner's wife) for the Marfan's Trust. We hadn't realised Sir John Taverner suffers from this syndrome. They have 2 children with Marfans also.

It was a really informative appeal.

Thanks, wonder if I can find it on a 'listen again' link somewhere

oh my word  that's put the wind up me, I'm 38! However, I do have fairly regular echo cardiagrams done to detect any signs of valve problems and/or aorta problems. I dread the day they may say to me I need surgery.

I'd better make a donation :anxious:

It's great that you have the chickens and are intending to go on the course. You are obviously getting good attention in terms of medication and drs advice. I would recommend getting on that waiting list for cognitive behavioural therapy while you keep looking for other help. Sure, you would hope to be better within two years but at least you are on the list and it might go quicker than you think.

Although CBT is known to be excellent for anxiety related problems, the most important thing in counselling is the relationship you build up with a properly qualified therapist. If you are able I would forget about the waiting list and go to the BACP (British association of counsellors and psychotherapists) website and find a counsellor near you. I don't know your area of the country well, but it's worth looking for low cost counselling agencies. I know of these in the Gloucestershire area but I don't know what is available for you. Although CBT is often recommended for anxiety related problems you would be able to do good work with any qualified professional with either a Person Centred approach or a Psychodynamic approach or Gestalt or Humanistic or whatever they label themselves. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable with them and happy with your relationship with them - ie you can be yourself and feel accepted and not judged - and that they are qualified and know what they are doing.

Good luck with this one. I've seen people get through. There is hope :)
